Porter: Notebook on Oklahoma State-Tulsa

I emptied the tank in my 10 Thoughts, but now it’s time to empty my brain in this week’s notebook. Here are notes, takes, thoughts and nuggets (even some CFA minis!) on OSU’s 40-21 victory over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.

• You will be stunned to learn that my very first take here is a uniform one. I loved these unis — which Carson nailed on our pod this week, by the way — but they would be about 3x better if the numbers were orange instead of black. Flip the colors around in your mind, and imagine what perfection looks like.

• The referee’s mic was hilarious. It sounded like the first podcast I tried to do when you do the fake static thing with your hand over your mouth as a funny. Except it was real.

• Why was Montgomery wearing a pullover jacket thing in 124-degree weather? Is that a Tough Guy Football thing like when the Packers linemen don’t wear sleeves in the cold?

• OSU is 3-0 for the third straight year and 10th time since Gundy took over.

• Here’s something one of the announcers said: “I would say Tennessee is frostbitten.” I was crying laughing. He meant snakebitten! ???

• Why are all refs kinda jacked now? What’s up with that?

• Chuba scoring on the first play is the first time that’s happened since James Washington did it against Pitt in 2016.

• Logan Carter has a mini-Gronk look. Maybe more like Infant Gronk. They need to go to him more. Related: Jelani has 0 catches in three games.

• Tylan Wallace: 8 targets. Everyone else on the team: 8 targets. According to the box score. Which means four were to nobody (either INTs or out of bounds).

• Check yes or no: Trace Ford will play QB and K at some point this year.

• Audible gasps at the turned corner.

• Nothing screams non-Power 5 more than that RIDDELL on the forehead of the helmet you’re wearing, Tulsa. Nothing!

• I wish I would have seen this.

• Chuba’s 256 yards are the most since Kendall Hunter put up 257 against Washington State. Nine years ago. Just the ninth 200-yard game in the Gundy era (two by Chuba in the last three games).

• Tulsa’s tight end looks like a defensive tackle! Look at this fella.

• Chuba approached the top 10 all-time record for most carries in a single game. Against Tulsa. On September 14. I find this to be a bit disconcerting.

• OSU scored 14 in the first 3:37 in the first half and just 6 in the next 26:23. Also, how scared are we going to be for every extra point in a big spot from now until the end of the season?

• Here’s what I wrote at halftime on our game thread (receipts!).

I’m not concerned. I think it’s good for them to experience something like this against a not-great team and they’ll end up winning by a couple of TDs. Teams like Tulsa in weather like this usually wear down against teams like OSU as the game goes on. It’s more fun to panic at halftime than to be reasonable, but unless they push it to 2-3 TDs early, I’m not going to get real worked up.

I am rarely right so it feels good to brag when I am.

• Amen has moments where I’m like, “Wait, how good is he?!”

• There’s not much in the world I loathe more than I loathe running an option to the short side of the field.

• If A&M did this, we would have material for years.

• I don’t even watch opposing team punts if that tells you anything.

• More Chuba for funsies.

• The unsportsmanlike on Jernigan. What in the world?! I have so many questions!

• OSU is definitely going to let Chuba throw one on those long, delayed sweep plays out to the bigger side of the field. If they don’t, then Sean Gleeson isn’t who we thought he was.

• Seth Boomer was always going to be a QB at a college in Oklahoma, right?

• Jam it into my bloodstream.
