Quotable: Mason Rudolph Discusses Breaking Barry Sanders’ Record

Oklahoma State beat Kansas 58-17 on Saturday, and Mike Gundy and Co. spoke with the media afterwards. There were some solid quotes on a senior sendoff day. Let’s get to the best of them.

Rudolph on Breaking Barry’s Single Season TD Record

“I didn’t know that. I think Barry Sanders did a lot for the university and obviously won a Heisman Trophy so I think he’ll always be the best from Oklahoma State. It takes a lot around you to get something like that done. Not everyone in the country has James Washington, Justice Hill, Marcell Ateman and Jalen McCleskey to throw the ball around to. I’ve been blessed with a lot of weapons to pass the ball to, and it has been fun. I couldn’t have done it without those guys and the guys up front blocking for me. I’m just really happy and feeling very blessed.”

Kansas coach David Beaty on OSU

“They do have some weapons. They are an impressive team. They will be a match for whoever they play in a bowl game. It’s a tough conference. For that team right there not to be in the championship is crazy to me because they are a talented team. It just tells how talented this conference is from top to bottom.”

Gundy on the seniors

“This group is hard. Every year is hard. As I get older, I get a little more emotional. You just never know when it’s going to end. When you see those guys move on who have been with us, the character and the class is important and when you have a group like those guys it’s just tough to see them go.”

Glenn Spencer on the seniors

“You see them come in as pups and grow as men and leaders. Coach said in the locker room that we had tremendous leadership in this class. It’s easy to lead right when everything is going great. But to lead when life hits you in the mouth, that’s a great life lesson, and these guys didn’t blink. I’m just proud of them and how they persevered. Their last home game on this field they accomplished something great, and I’m happy for them.”

Kansas Linebacker Joe Dineen

“We knew he was obviously a stud coming in. His (offensive) line is great. We had a hard time getting pressure on him throughout the game. He was accurate. He didn’t miss many open guys. He extended plays. He did a lot, and he ran I think two touchdowns.”

Washington on his handshake celebration with Stoner

“When we’re not at the stadium and me and Stoner see each other, no matter where we are, we walk up to each other and shake each other’s hand, nice and formal like that. I always mess with him and tell him he looks like a lawyer with his hair and stuff. That’s why we do that.”

Ramon on Whitener intercepting the ball in front of him

“It’s Thanksgiving week, I have to give sometimes so that’s what I did. I love Chad, it’s Thanksgiving.

Rudolph on Stoner’s TD

“I was giving Marcell a hard time. I was like, ‘That’s how you take a ball and score. You don’t get tackled on the 1.’ I think Stoner’s a bit faster than him, he’s a bigger guy. But still, Marcell, finish the play out. It’s your Senior Day, score!”

Gundy on the small crowd

“They missed a heck of a show. That’s their choice. I’m good with that … There’s only so many times you get to see guys like that play. They’re pretty special. I’m not down on them, but you missed a heck of a show.”

Rudolph on Boone pickens

“I told Boone a long time ago I probably never would have came to Oklahoma State if it wasn’t for him.”

Washington on Rudolph

“(I’ll miss Mason) being my friend. It’s not going to be the same. We’ll go to the next level. It’s not like we’ll see each other every day. Him being my friend. His leadership. When we mess up, he’s the first guy there. For him to get us going like that, it means a lot to me and it means a lot to other guys, I’m sure.”
