Report: Mike Boynton Completes Staff By Hiring David Kontaxis from James Madison

According to a report from Mark Cooper of the Tulsa World, Mike Boynton completed his coaching staff on Friday by hiring former James Madison assistant coach David Kontaxis.

Before joining the James Madison staff in spring of 2016, Kontaxis previously spent seven years involved in Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) organizations in the Mid-Atlantic region, according to the school’s website.

He also served as the Director of Basketball Operations at William & Mary for the 2008-09 season—his only other experience at the college level.

Kontaxis got his start in coaching at the prep level in the Maryland area and with his ties to the AAU community, Boynton could be making this move as a way to build inroads into recruiting circles with a guy who has been deeply embedded with the process in the past. At the very least, it broadens OSU’s recruiting reach into the talent-rich D.C. area.

Although Kontaxis’ college coaching experience is very limited, his lone season at James Madison does come with a black mark: He was suspended for two games last season for violating athletics department policy. A report from the Daily News-Records Josh Walfish indicated the suspension was not related to any type of NCAA violation or legal issue, but rather an “internal athletic department issue.”

In addition to Kontaxis, Boynton’s coaching staff includes former Brad Underwood assistant Lamont Evans, who was promoted to associate head coach, along with former Miami (OH) head coach John Cooper.
