Report: Mike Gundy Spoke with Peyton Manning on UT Job; No Decision Expected Tuesday

The Mike Gundy to Tennessee rumors will play out one more day at the least, it seems.

According to Brett McMurphy, no decision from Gundy is expected on Tuesday — despite multiple reports indicating the OSU coach was scheduled to meet with Tennessee officials on Tuesday in Dallas. McMurphy also adds that Volunteers legend Peyton Manning had a phone conversation with Gundy in an effort to recruit him to Knoxville, among other phone conversations.

Here’s more from McMurphy, an Oklahoma State alum, on the Gundy-UT saga.

Is Gundy, who has talked with other schools in the past, serious about leaving his alma mater? One source says “absolutely,” while another isn’t so sure. “You might as well say Nick Saban is up for the Rice job,” the source said.

Is Gundy seriously considering the job? I tend to think yes, simply because this is obviously not a leverage play. Mike Gundy can stay at OSU for as long as he’d like and just got a brand new contract he’d been efforting for.

Just this past week, Gundy told the Tulsa World that he is “rooted here,” adding that his stability at OSU is “more than it ever has been.” But he also added that given a special circumstance, he might have to listen to offers.

“I’m very happy in the situation I’m in. But one guy said, ‘Well, what if they call and give you a six-year deal at nine million dollars a year?’ I don’t know. I’d probably have to listen. You know? Something crazy.”

According to a source, Mike Gundy is expected to meet with a committed recruit on Tuesday evening in the greater Dallas area, and indications are that he intends to keep that visit. As for visits in the coming days …. it seems we’ll know more when, or if, Gundy makes a decision on Wednesday.

But right now it looks like the ball might be in Gundy’s court.
