Sorting out the Transfers: Who’s in and who’s out?

If you’ve been tuned into the football world, you may know that Mike Gundy has taken the NCAA transfer world by storm in recent years. But eligibility and NCAA transfer rules are a tricky subject, so you’re probably thinking, “Who the heck is going to play for us and who’s sitting?”

Here’s your quick reference guide on who to expect to see next season, and who will be forced to ride the pine.

Michael Hunter – Cornerback

Hunter was a two-year starter at Indiana and joins the Cowboys with much needed experience at cornerback. He will be eligible immediately this season thanks to the graduate transfer rule. By most accounts, he may be headed for the starting job opposite Kevin Peterson.

Chris Carson – Running back

Carson is the bell ringer of the group. Most OSU fans had their fingers and toes crossed he would choose the Pokes over Georgia, and to the dismay of #DawgNation that’s exactly what he did. Carson transferred from Butler County Community College and will also be eligible immediately this season (Thank you Lord)! He’ll get his opportunity at playing time this season, and don’t be surprised if he becomes the bell cow by mid season. I mean, just look at him. Would you want to tackle him?

Chad Whitener – Linebacker

Whitener is a transfer from the University of Cal Berkeley, who is going into his second year in Stillwater. He was forced to sit out last season due to NCAA transfer rules, but is eligible this season and will be a valuable backer in the rotation this season – one of the deepest groups for Gundy this season.

Victor Salako – Offensive Tackle

Salako transferred from the University of Alabama-Birmingham, and will be eligible immediately this season after UAB decided to shut down their football program. Salako is a 6-foot-6, 320ish-pound lineman who will be taking care of QB1’s blind side. If anyone is going to take that responsibility, Salako is the man you want. That is one large man.

Derrick Moncrief – Safety

Moncrief recently decided to take his talents to South Bea… Stillwater two weeks ago, but will be forced to sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules. Moncrief is a former No. 1 junior college safety whose most recent stop lead him through Auburn. Moncrief will more than likely slide right into the secondary and barring injury, be a key player with experience going into the 2016 season. He will only have one year of eligibility remaining, so I would expect him to take full advantage of his last opportunity at the college level. Which will greatly benefit the Cowboys.

Jordan Burton – Linebacker

Burton transferred from Kilgore Junior College and will likely be taking over the starting job vacated by Josh Furman after his eligibility expired. Burton is eligible immediately and will be one of the biggest surprises on defense this season. He’s a difference maker.

Todd Mays – Running back

Mays transferred from EMCC, a junior college powerhouse where he shined as a running back and quarterback. Mays is eligible this season, and will be a key rotation player behind Carson and Childs at running back.

Motekiai Maile – Defensive Tackle

Maile just became an even more valuable player with the season-ending injury to Vili Levini. Maile will man the defensive tackle position, and will be expected to step in and compete for the starting job alongside Vincent Taylor.

Brandon Pertile – Offensive Line

Pertile joins OSU from Mesa C.C. and will be eligible this season to compete for a spot on the line. At 6-foot-6, 315 pounds, his size is a much needed asset that will play into the running games favor this season.
