The Reload: Top PG Target Nearing Decision

The Reload is PFB’s recruiting recap catching you up to speed with the latest Oklahoma State recruiting news, with an ear to the ground for what to expect.

Four-star PG target nearing decision

Four-star Florida point guard Elijah Weaver is set to make his college decision on Monday. He’s picking between USC, Ohio State, Florida and OSU.

According to 247Sports, Weaver is a heavy USC lean — which is curious considering the Trojans recent involvement in the FBI’s probe into the recruiting scandal in college basketball. But even more curious is the coach who was once Weaver’s lead recruiter on the OSU staff.

“Our relationship has been good,” Weaver said of OSU recently. “One of their assistants, Lamont Evans, he was a Breakdown guy. I play with Breakdown now. So we have those family ties. He always talks about how good they were back in the day and how they had the best breakdown team so we always talk about that and it just strikes up conversation. He feels like family. He talks to my dad and we don’t talk about basketball all the time, it’s more how we are doing. It’s more like family. Our connection is good.”

With no Lamont Evans, who was terminated in light of his involvement in the bribery scheme, and USC assistant Tony Bland taking heat in the same situation, I’m curious if that now makes Ohio State a potential favorite.

Whoever he picks Monday, my bet is it won’t be OSU.

Boynton loses out in Underwood recruiting battle

Five-star point guard Ayo Dosunmu, a Chicago native whom OSU offered earlier this spring, committed to Illinois and Brad Underwood on Thursday over OSU. Dosunmu eliminated OSU from consideration recently and ultimately chose to stay home over other finalist Wake Forest.

“The love the fans showed me was wonderful,” Dosunmu said of his decision. “I got down there and they were screaming, ‘We want Ayo!’ About 500 (fans) came to watch me work out. I like that vibe.”

With Weaver set to commit (and likely elsewhere) on Monday, the chances of taking a point guard in the 2018 class appear slim to none among current targets. But there’s always a chance a late bloomer could pop up this fall and into the spring that lands on OSU’s radar.

New targets emerge for 2018 and 2020

Junior college small forward Trevelin Queen announced this week OSU extended him a scholarship offer, joining the likes of Wichita State, Iona, Western Kentucky and CSU among schools who have offered the 2018 prospect this month.

Queen is a 6-foot-6, 185-pound recruit playing at New Mexico Military Institute.

Also new to OSU’s radar is Moses Moody, a 2020 shooting guard from Little Rock who reported a new offer this week from OSU. OU, Florida State, Baylor and Arkansas have already made scholarship offers to Moody, who already projects as a top-50 player in his class nationally according to 247Sports. Moody is one of a half dozen SG prospects in the 2020 class who have been offered by the Pokes, joining notable in-state recruit Bryce Thompson, who visited this past weekend.
