Three takeaways on three OSU sophomores.

The Cowgirls certainly haven’t eased their way into the 2025 season. They dived in head first with trips to Mexico and Florida to play a ton of high-level softball.

Oklahoma State sits at 5-4 after a 3-2 stretch in Clearwater. That record might not be what Cowgirl fans have grown accustomed to, but with this level of competition this early in the season, winning more than you’ve lost in an accomplishment within itself. OSU is already 2-2 against teams ranked in the top 10 of the NFCA ranking. The Cowgirls also started 2022 5-4. They finished that season 48-14 and a win away from the WCWS championship series, so any early season record takes can stay on ice, as far as I’m concerned.

Here are three takeaways I had from OSU’s trip to Florida. All three happen to be about sophomores.

1. Welcome, Katie Kutz

Katie Kutz was a big-time recruit, and it hasn’t taken that pedigree long to show.

She saw action in four games in Clearwater, where she threw 11 2/3 innings and gave up five runs (two earned) on 11 hits while walking five and striking out 10. In three of the four games she pitched this past weekend, she earned the win and is now 4-1 in two weekends as a sophomore.

Coming into the year, the Cowgirls had three pitchers with at least 170 career innings pitched: Ruby Meylan (303 2/3), RyLee Crandall (286) and Kyra Aycock (170 1/3). As a freshman last season, Kutz threw 24 2/3 innings. With that experience gap, it wasn’t crazy for OSU fans to be thinking more about those other three pitchers coming into the year, but this was an arrival-type weekend for Kutz. And though she might’ve not had a ton of experience coming into the year, she threw in some big-time spots this weekend.

Kutz took over for Meylan with a runner on in the sixth against Alabama. The Crimson Tide had two on with one out before Kutz forced a flyout and then slammed the door with a big strikeout.

Kutz allowed a run in the seventh before again closing the frame with another big strikeout to set up OSU’s walk-off win.

Through two weekends, Kutz’s 1.84 ERA leads the Cowgirls, and she’s thrown the second-most number of innings (19) behind All-American Meylan (24). Kutz also has a .225 batting average against, which is a team-best. She’s not a finished product. Her walk numbers are probably higher than Kenny Gajewksi would like, but the stock is definitely trending up for Kutz.

2. Rosie Davis Remains Clutch

The moment was rarely too big for Rosie Davis as a freshman last season, and that seems to have carried over into her sophomore year.

In her first year of college softball, Davis his .511 with runners in scoring position and at times looked like one of the best players on the Cowgirls’ WCWS team despite being only a freshman. Davis came to the plate in a pair of big moments this weekend and proved that the clutch gene didn’t leave her during the offseason.

She set up the Cowgirls’ first walk off this past weekend before delivering the second.

With two on and two out in the seventh against No. 5 Texas A&M, Davis was down to the Cowgirls’ final strike before she got ahold of one and put it off the wall in right-center to score the pair and cut A&M’s lead to 5-4. Karli Godwin (another sophomore!) ended it with her two-run shot to left, but she doesn’t even get that chance without a clutch bit of hitting from Davis.

Davis was again down to the Cowgirls’ final strike Sunday night against No. 14 Alabama but had two runners in scoring position. Davis looped a 2-2 pitch into shallow right field, scoring the two runs and sending OSU home happy.

Davis is hitting .333 this season with a team-leading eight RBIs. She’s also tied for the team lead with two home runs.

3. Karli Godwin Is Spooky Good

Through 27 at-bats against some high-level competition, Godwin is hitting .481 with a 1.289 OPS and a .741 slugging percentage. Known more for her power, she also has a .548 on-base percentage.

Godwin has at least one hit in all nine of OSU’s games to this point — a nine-game stretch that included six games against ranked opponents. And if you watched Godwin last year, this isn’t super surprising. She’s just building off what was a fantastic freshman season. In 2024, Godwin was already an All-Big 12 First Team selection while being a freshman All-American and a top 10 finalist for the NFCA’s Freshman of the Year award.
