Week 8 Bowl Projections: OSU vs. OSU in the Cotton Bowl?
After an insane week of college football in which four top 10 teams lost, and Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and TCU solidified themselves as the primary contenders in the Big 12, we have some new bowl projections. At the request of a commenter (Scott King), I tossed in The Score which employs Brett McMurphy (formerly of ESPN and CBS) for his take as well (it was a good one).
Here is how the bowls look this week for the Pokes.
Outlet | Bowl | Team |
---|---|---|
USA Today | Alamo Bowl | Washington State |
CBS Sports | Fiesta Bowl (NY6) | USC |
ESPN (Kyle Bonagura) | Alamo Bowl | Stanford |
ESPN (David Hale) | Cotton Bowl (NY6) | USC |
SB Nation | Alamo Bowl | USC |
Bleacher Report | Alamo Bowl | Washington |
Sports Illustrated | Camping World Bowl | Georgia Tech |
Sporting News | Alamo Bowl | Stanford |
The Score (Brett McMurphy) | Cotton Bowl (NY6) | Ohio State |
Still a looooot of Alamo in there. That’s where Oklahoma State would head if, for example, TCU wins the Big 12 and makes the playoff and Oklahoma also makes it to a New Year’s 6 matchup as an at-large. OSU would also go to the Alamo if it finishes second in the Big 12 but no Big 12 teams make the CFP.
It gets interesting if you think OSU is either going to win the Big 12 or finish second to a team that makes the CFP or even finish third but still get a NY6 at-large. This is what Jerry Palm (CBS), David Hale (ESPN) and McMurphy think.
Here’s how they slot the top Big 12 teams.
CFP | NY6 | NY6 | NY6 | Alamo | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
McMurphy (Score) | TCU | Oklahoma State | Oklahoma | N/A | WVU |
Hale (ESPN) | TCU | Oklahoma State | N/A | N/A | Oklahoma |
Palm (CBS) | N/A | Oklahoma State | Oklahoma | TCU | WVU |
The most interesting one is Palm’s for CBS. He thinks three (!) Big 12 teams will get NY6 games but no Big 12 teams will be in the CFP. Hale thinks what happened in 2015 will happen again. A Big 12 team will make the CFP and the runner up will go to the NY6 with the third team going to the Alamo Bowl. And McMurphy combines the two theories.
No matter how it plays out, it’s going to be fascinating to watch as the second half of the season unfolds. Hopefully the Cowboys can hang on as long as possible to the thread of possibly making it to the CFP because Ohio State in the Cotton (I’m weak!) or USC in the Fiesta would be a hell of a consolation prize.
