WR Comps: Tylan Wallace Shares Similarities with this Current Eagle

Tylan Wallace compares favorably to a big-time playmaker in the NFL.

I wrapped up my running back comparison series a couple of weeks ago with Chuba Hubbard. Now that both the quarterback and running back comps are complete, I’m moving on to the talented Oklahoma State receiving unit.

I’ll be starting this group off with leading receiver Tylan Wallace.

Tylan Wallace – 6-0, 185
Player Comparison: Nelson Agholor

When considering a comparison for Wallace, I was looking for someone who is a deep threat, but also a great route runner. In addition, someone with the explosiveness to make plays after the catch. I found all of this in former USC Trojan and current Philadelphia Eagle, Nelson Agholor.

Along with the attributes mentioned above, Agholor and Wallace are both receivers who play bigger than their listed sizes. The Cowboy sophomore is listed at 6-0, 185 and Agholor comes in at 6-0, 198. I went back and looked at Agholor’s measurements from his sophomore season at USC, and they were exactly what Wallace’s are currently, 6-0, 185.

Wallace lines up primarily at outside receiver, which is also where Agholor played the majority of his college career. The Eagles moved Agholor to the slot in 2017, where he thrived. However, when Alshon Jeffrey has had to miss time due to injury, Agholor has been moved back to the outside. Similarly to Agholor, I could see Wallace possessing this versatility and excelling both inside and outside at the next level.

When it comes to film, the first thing I noticed was Agholor’s ability make contested catches over a defender.

This is something we’ve seen Wallace do on multiple occasions this year.

In addition, both players are solid route runners and are able to create separation very quickly. Here we see Agholor create space and then turn this quick slant into a touchdown.

We saw Wallace turn a slant into a touchdown earlier this season against Kansas.

Although neither guy is touted as a “physical” receiver, both players aren’t afraid to lay the wood when necessary. We saw Wallace make a nice block to help extend this play for Jelani Woods against Iowa State.

And, in the clip below we see Agholor lay a big hit on a defender.

Maybe it was a little too big since he was penalized and later fined, but, I think you get the point. They share that physicality.

Even though we haven’t seen a lot of positive plays from Tylan as a return man, I think he possesses the skill set to do the things Agholor did returning punts at USC.

When I projected out Wallace’s statistics for the remainder of the season, including a bowl game (I hope), and compared them to Agholor’s best year at USC, here’s how they stacked up:

• Wallace — 74 receptions, 1,333 yards, 7 touchdowns
• Agholor — 104 receptions, 1,313 yards, 12 touchdowns

The two are pretty similar in terms of yards, with Agholor recording more receptions and touchdowns. Plus, this was Agholor’s senior season and I expect Wallace to only get better during his Cowboy tenure.
