Glenn Spencer Named Interim Head Coach at Florida Atlantic
Spencer gets his first shot as a D-I head coach.
Former Oklahoma State defensive coordinator and longtime assistant, Glenn Spencer will get his first chance to lead a Division I program as its head coach, at least in the interim.
After Lane Kiffin vacated the position to take on CEO duties at Ole Miss, Spencer was appointed the interim head coach at Florida Atlantic. He joined the Owls staff one year ago as defensive coordinator.
Oklahoma State let Spencer go following the 2017 season and he spent one year as DC at Charlotte before taking the same job with the Owls in December of 2018.
Under Spencer’s tutelage, Florida Atlantic’s defense has recorded a program-record 21 interceptions so far this season and leads the FBS with 31 turnovers forced. I guess takeaways travel.
The Owls are 10-3 this season after beating UAB to take the Conference USA crown. Spencer will serve as head coach for FAU’s bowl matchup. His viability as a longterm candidate is uncertain. He was up for the UTSA head coaching job in 2015. Spencer was also the head coach of Division II program West Georgia from 1998-2000, where he went 28-7 and won two Gulf South Conference titles.
