Seven Things to Know as OSU Tries to Make it 10 Straight Against Texas Tech

Justice Hill is coming up on some big time records.

Oklahoma State is trying to keep a nearly 20-year streak intact as the Fightin’ Kingsburys come to Stillwater on Saturday night. As I rolled through the notes for Saturday’s game, here are seven things that stood out to me.

10-Win Seasons

This has absolutely nothing to do with Texas Tech, but I thought it was worth pointing out the following in lieu of all our Mike Gundy talk on the podcast this week: Since Gundy has became the head coach in 2005, OSU has finished the season with 10 wins six times. In the 10 years leading up to Gundy being the head coach, OSU finished the season with eight wins three times. Staggering.

All But One

OSU is ranked No. 15 in the AP Poll this week and has now been ranked in the top 15 in 10 of the last 11 seasons, and I bet you can’t guess which year they failed to crack the top 15. Hint: It wasn’t 2014.

It was actually 2012.

Tech actually invented two decades of futility

If OSU wins on Saturday, it will extend a streak that started in 2001, the last time Tech won in Stillwater. Their next chance is obviously 2020. Can you imagine? There are going to be kids in college in 2020 who have never seen Tech win in Stillwater. Oh, and OSU is going for its 10th victory in a row overall against the Raiders.

Other teams that have lost at least 10 in a row to OSU include …

Kansas State: 11 in a row from 1947-1962
Central Oklahoma: 1908-1922 (!)

Unranked opponents with Dana’s offense

How about this one … since 2010, OSU is 61-7 against unranked opponents. That’s a 90 percent clip against teams outside the top 25. I know Gundy gets crap for Bedlam (and he should), but his ability to 1. Make OSU a perennial top-25 team and 2. Take care of business against teams against whom he should take care of business is pretty impressive.

Philly Philly

Matt Ammendola missed two field goals against Texas Tech last year. He’s only missed two since Texas Tech last year. In that span he’s 21/23 and has made 17 straight.

Offense + Defense

The only three Power 5 teams in the country through three games that rank in the top 20 in total offense and total defense are Mississippi State, Clemson and Oklahoma State.

  • Mississippi State: No. 8 in offense | No. 8
  • Clemson: No. 20 | No. 10
  • Oklahoma State: No. 6 | No. 17

I expect that to change a bit as OSU enters Big 12 play consider who they played in the nonconference portion of the season, but it’s still a pretty impressive trio.

Two Hundies

Justice Hill needs two bills’ worth of rushing yards against Texas Tech to move into No. 8 on the all-time rushing list, one yard ahead of Joe Randle. Now is the time I should probably remind you that Justice Hill, if he wants it, has 23 games left in Stillwater.
