Studying for Finals

Virginia Tech has fared well against spread offenses this year… except for their only Big 12-opponent.

But the Hokies have seen numerous up-tempo, spread offenses this season – and fared reasonably well. Tech has not allowed 400 yards passing in any game this season and only two 300-yard passing games.

One of those came in the season opener against West Virginia, a familiar foe for Oklahoma State since both reside in the Big 12. WVU quarterback Will Grier threw for 371 yards and three touchdowns against the Hokies. [HokieSports.com]

Ruh-roh, I’ll take that for data. Will Grier is a solid player but he’s no Mason Rudolph.

Spencer Sanders-Patton

This gem on incoming OSU quarterback Spencer Sanders came out concerning his first quarter injury in last year’s Texas playoffs.

Meanwhile, players and coaches milled around — dejected and unsure of what to do or say.

At that moment, starting quarterback Spencer Sanders emerged from the locker room on crutches and came toward me. He knew exactly what to say.

“I know this,” Sanders said with barely-dried tears on his face. He watched the game from the sideline after tearing his ACL in the second quarter. “I wouldn’t have lost that game.”

Football is a team game, and Sanders wasn’t trying to insinuate anything different. He was and is the consummate team player. But he’s also Spencer Sanders. With more than 13,000 total career yards and 167 touchdowns, he may be the best quarterback to ever come through Denton. [Denton Record Chronicle]

A quarterback with confidence, skill and leadership capacity has a high ceiling – and it appears Sanders has that desirable trio.

Cultural Fit

To cap off the all-2018 recruiting class edition of the bullets, who could be Spencer Sanders’ favorite target in C.J. Moore had some thoughts on what he looks forward to at OSU.

What are you looking forward to most when you get on campus next summer?

“The thing I’m looking forward to most is playing, winning. Once you get on campus, it’s just a learning process. You can never be comfortable with where you’re at. So I’m just looking to constantly improve my game so I can go to the next level after college.” [NewsOK]

It’s incredible that Oklahoma State can attract players like this (regardless of family connections). Gundy’s guys: want to learn and get better and have an expectation to win.

This will certainly be nice.
