Group of Former Cowboys Set to Compete in the Bill Farrell Memorial
A quartet of former Cowboys is set to compete in the Bill Farrell Memorial starting this Saturday.
If you’re not an avid follower of wrestling and maybe just went to a few matches in college or even just started reading about it here on the blog there’s a pretty big difference in collegiate style wrestling we’ve been covering for the last few months and freestyle wrestling that we see in the Olympics and in International wrestling.
This next “season” that we’re moving into now and will be covering over the next few months consists of freestyle and greco. Here is a breakdown of the rules. When guys are on their feet the take-downs are similar to what you see in the collegiate style of wrestling, but if you’re thrown or roll across your back you give up points that you wouldn’t normally in a collegiate match. When on bottom you basically just try not to get turned for a bit and if you don’t they let you back up on your feet. On top you try and get a turn, but the points are scored very different than in the collegiate style.
This is an old video (only one I could find) and some rules are slightly different than he describes now, this helps you get a good idea of it though.
Anyway, hope that gives you a bit of an idea of what freestyle is if you’re new to it.
The former Cowboys registered for the tournament are Eddie Klimara at 57 KG, Jon Morrison at 61 KG, Alex Dieringer at 79 KG, and Austin Schafer at 97 KG.
Dieringer wrestled like a man on fire in Ukraine about a month ago and should be the favorite here. The others all could possibly medal at a tournament like this and that would be huge for them in their freestyle careers. Dieringer is trying to repeat his championship performance from last year where he won the tournament.
Schedule for Freestyle in the tournament is listed below.
Saturday, March 31
Men’s Freestyle weigh-ins                  7:00 AM – 7:30 AM
Men’s Freestyle Session I (Preliminaries)      9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Men’s Freestyle Medal Matches             6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
