Daily Bullets (Oct. 5): Tylan’s Body Control, Gooch Talks Steaks

Happy birthday to my mom. The best mom (and biggest Mike Yurcich detractor) I know (kidding … sort of).

OSU Kaepernick Reaction

This was pretty interesting. Fans from various schools wrote to school administrators about Nike and their schools following the Kap campaign.

On Sept. 6, Ryan Snow wrote to athletics director Mike Holder with a slightly different take on the school’s Nike contract.

“I’m sure your inbox has been flooded with complaints about our athletic deal with Nike,” Snow wrote. “Remember, 17-18-year-old black men who want to play sports at Oklahoma State are not offended by the new ad. They’re pleased Nike is standing with them and their struggles; and with our Nike partnership, Oklahoma State stands with them too. It’s the recruits that matter, not the old white men sitting in the seats.”

That e-mail was notable enough for Holder to forward to school president Burns Hargis, senior vice president and general counsel Gary Clark and deputy director of athletics Chad Weiberg. [USA Today]

I’m sure everyone has a measured and nuanced take on that.

The ✈️? Life

This feature on Talor Gooch (by Talor Gooch?) is fantastic.

When we ran gassers on the football field, a senior said I sounded like one. Other than 6 a.m. workouts, there was no scheduled practice. We’d loosely gather at the golf course for lunch after our last classes. I was there from 12:30 to 6:30 every day but never played better than fourth in our lineup. Guys like Morgan Hoffmann, Kevin Tway and Peter Uihlein were always ahead of me. Life on a premier team is good. We flew on a private jet and ate steaks at Ruth’s Chris. [Golf Digest]

ABC. Always. Be. Crootin.

Next James?

Tylan can (and will) be compared to anybody in OSU’s past. Young James might be a good one, though. I’m not sure the one Gundy used at the beginning of the year — shiftier Josh Stewart — is one I agree with.

Aside from polish and experience, the one attribute Washington possessed that most receivers can’t replicate was his acceleration. It was “unusual,” as Gundy called it, but Washington actually sped up as he ran through the football on deep throws, while most receivers slow down.

Still, the young Wallace has tools that most receivers don’t, too.

“It’s natural when you start to see it, you start to try to slow down. James never slowed down,” Gundy said. “Tylan doesn’t have that, I don’t think, he’s still young, but I think Tylan might have better body control on balls that aren’t in the air. There’s times he’s probably more flexible at that than maybe what James is.” [Tulsa World]

OSU and NCAA News

Don’t expect OSU to go deep this weekend … Berry Tramel picks Iowa State this weekend … All the polling accolades for Marcus Smart.

Nobody cares about the #bloglyfe … but this is true.
