On Friday night just hours before Oklahoma State kicked off its 2019 football season, word broke that Spencer Sanders would be QB1 for the Cowboys. If there were nerves about the weight of that role, he surely didn’t show it.

In his college debut, Sanders delivered on all the hype that’s trailed him since he signed with OSU a year ago. He put up an efficient 19-of-24 passing effort for 203 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions against Oregon State in a winning effort. He also added 13 carries for 109 yards along with a hurdle and some absolute dimes.

“I thought he handled the game really well,” said coach Mike Gundy after the win. “I didn’t think he ever was flustered, thought his demeanor was good, thought he rushed the ball well, seemed like he understood the throwing game. For a first time out, I thought he played pretty well.”

Gundy in the past has been hard — and even critical — of his quarterback play. But his glowing comments on Sanders speaks to just how well he played in his debut.

Sanders can improve and will face stiffer competition to prove himself moving on this season, but his calming swagger and consistent play in OSU’s debut is a sign of more positive things to come.

“Being a good quarterback in our offense is being able to handle the game and not get flustered,” said Gundy. “He was in control of the game pretty well.”
