Oklahoma State Still Unranked after Season-Opening Win
OSU hasn’t done enough to breach the top 25… yet.
Despite the high-powered offensive performance in its 53-36 win at Oregon State, Oklahoma State remains outside the top 25 in both the AP and coaches polls.
OSU did make some headway, however. The Cowboys, who received only three votes in the AP’s preseason poll (good for 43rd), received eight votes after Week 1 which puts them at No. 33. In the coaches poll, OSU went from 20 votes, up to 32, good for 41st.
This shouldn’t be a huge shock based on the fact that Oregon State was one of college football’s worst teams last season. But Nebraska, who got all it could handle from South Alabama, only dropped one spot from 24th to 25th, and is coming off of back-to-back 4-8 seasons.
All three Big 12 teams remained in the top 25 with Oklahoma static at No. 4 and Texas’ incremental ascension from 10 to 9 after its beatdown of Louisiana Tech. Iowa State dropped from 21st to T-25th after needing three overtime periods to get the W over FCS opponent Northern Iowa.
The Cowboys will have plenty of time to make their case for a spot in the polls. Matchups against McNeese State and Tulsa won’t move the needle much, but other teams will fall out and OSU can build style points if they can win big. If nothing else, a 3-0 OSU squad will get all the credit it wants if it can upend the Longhorns in Austin.
