Boynton Says There Is No Update on Montreal Pena’s Status
Still no update on Pena.
Montreal Pena is the only member of the Cowboys’ highly touted 2020 class that hasn’t played this season.
The 6-foot-10 bouncy forward hasn’t even been available on the bench for Mike Boynton for what Oklahoma State has called personal reasons. On Friday, Boynton said there was no update on Pena’s status.
“I promise as soon as there is [an update], we’ll provide one,” Boynton said. “We’re trying to help him work through some personal issues. Obviously don’t want to get into the specifics of it, but we care for him, we love him, he’s around. We’ll try to help him. A lot of this is about basketball, and when he’s ready to help us basketball-wise he will, but he can’t help us in basketball if we can’t help him in his personal life. So, we need to do that first.”
Pena came to OSU as a three-star prospect out of Martin High School in Arlington.
He played alongside OSU guards Cade Cunningham and Rondel Walker on the 2019 EYBL AAU circuit, where he averaged 8.8 points a game on a ridiculous 74-percent shooting.
Pena provides a ridiculous amount of athleticism for his size. In July, he recorded a 42.5-inch vertical. No player of Pena’s size has ever jumped that high at the NBA Combine since records started in 2000.
