Arizona State Quarterback Sam Leavitt Expected to Play against Oklahoma State
The Sun Devils will have their QB1 back.
The Sun Devils will have their starting QB back and ready to go when they arrive at BPS.
Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt will play, according to head coach Kenny Dillingham. The Sun Devils coach spoke with media members on Wednesday stating, “He’s going to be the guy. He looked really good today.”
This is an update from Dillingham’s “70/30″ statement from Monday when he explaining his confidence level that the redshirt freshman would return after going down with injury two weeks ago.
“But it’s one of those, like, we gotta see him practice and stuff like that,” Dillingham said on Monday. “But he’s cleared to play. He wants to play. He’s excited about playing. He’s been putting in a lot of work to play, so we’ll see how that transpires.”
Leavitt when down after a hard hit in the second quarter of ASU’s 27-19 win over Utah. He went 11-for-18 for 154, a touchdown and an interception. On the year, Leavitt has completed 59% of his throws for eight TDs and four picks. He’s also rushed for four scores.
“I got hit in the ribs, started to spasm, and couldn’t really breathe,” Leavitt said.” But I was just fired up, so I was just really sad. I wasn’t really too worried about the pain, I was just sad I couldn’t put on for the team. So once I got the strength to get up, I told our team y’all please better go put this in one in. So I went to the tent, did whatever I had to do, got back out there and just did what I can to get a win with the team.”
Leavitt played four games as a true freshman at Michigan State last year before transferring to Arizona State and then won the QB competition this past offseason. In his absence, the Sun Devils turned to Jeff Sims, who went just 12 of 23 for 155 yards in a loss to Cincinnati before they headed into a fortunately timed off week. Arizona State is 5-1 with Leavitt as its starter.
The Cowboys and Sun Devils kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday in Boone Pickens Stadium.
