Todd Grantham’s first staff in Stillwater is starting to come together.

Oklahoma State is expected to add East Carolina’s Jules Montinar as a defensive backs coach, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Montinar coached corners and was the defensive passing game coordinator at East Carolina for the past two seasons. He’s also familiar with Grantham, OSU’s new DC. Montinar served as the corners coach at Florida in 2021, Grantham’s final season in Gainesville.

A graduate of Eastern Kentucky (receiving a bachelor’s and master’s degree in sports management), Montinar has coached corners at ECU, Temple, Florida, USF and Texas State. He also spent the 2019 season as a quality control assistant and Georgia and was a graduate assistant at Alabama in 2012 and 2013 (the Crimson Tide won a national title in 2012).

A native of Naples, Florida, Montinar was an all-state safety at Naples High. He initially started his college playing career at West Virginia before going to Eastern Kentucky. His coaching career started at EKU, coaching linebackers and defensive ends in 2008 and 2009. In back-to-back seasons, Montinar won a conference title at EKU as a player (2007) and then as a coach (2008). He also took part in the NFL’s summer coaching internship program with the Bengals in 2007 and 2008.

Grantham’s 2021 Florida defense with Montinar coaching corners ranked 25th nationally in pass defense, allowing 203.9 yards a game. The Gators also ranked 22nd nationally in completion percentage that season, holding opposing quarterbacks to 57.1%.

Montinar becomes the third assistant reportedly on Grantham’s defensive staff to this point, joining Ryan Osborn (defensive line) and Kap Dede (linebackers).
