Wake Forest Wide Receiver Chris Barnes Commits to Oklahoma State

The Cowboys added another wide receiver via the transfer portal, but this one moved OSU to the top of the rankings.

Former Wake Forest wide receiver Chris Barnes is headed to Oklahoma State, according to a report by On3 Sports. He’s an absolute playmaker.

 


Barnes is a 5-foot-7, 168-pound speedster fresh off a breakout redshirt freshman season. In 11 games, Barnes caught 39 passes for 547 yards and three touchdowns. He also logged 13 rushing attempts for another 143 yards at 11 yards per carry. As a return man, Barnes ran a 98-yard touchdown to the house against NC State back in September.

That kind of speed is what led the Demon Deacons all the way to Houston, Texas to recruit him. Barnes was a multi-sport athlete for North Shore High School where he competed in the 100- and 200-meters. He also racked up 1,970 yards and 23 touchdowns his junior and senior seasons as a prep.

Of note, Morris hired Nick Edwards as his receivers coach this offseason. Edwards was Barnes’ receivers coach at Wake Forest last season.

Barnes is the fifth wide receiver that Cowboys have landed in the portal, joining North Texas receivers Wyatt Young, Miles Coleman and Terrence Lewis as well as Akron transfer Israel Polk and former Illinois wideout Justin Bowick. But they had a lot to replace. Eleven Cowboys with the WR designation joined the portal including the likes of Gavin Freeman, Talyn Shettron and Shamar Rigby.

Barnes is a four-star prospect according to 247Sports, and the No. 35 wide receiver in the transfer portal. But he’s actually the third-highest wideout OSU has landed thus far, behind Young and Bowick. As of writing, the Cowboys are currently ranked No. 1 in 247’s transfer portal rankings.
