Watch: Gundy, Rudolph Talk About OSU Football Culture, Facilities
Mike Gundy’s won 100-plus games and counting as the head coach in Stillwater, including three 10-win seasons in the last four years. Outside of last season, they’ve done it all without any mullet magic or butch wax to lube up the offense.
So what’s the secret behind the success?
In an interview with OSU’s Orange Power Studios, both Gundy and Rudolph attributed it to the culture Gundy and his staff have established and nurtured in Stillwater over the years.
“We’ve created a culture here at Oklahoma State that’s second-to-none,” said Gundy. “We have a great family atmosphere with our football team. Our coaches treat our players like they would their own sons. We have open door policies, they can talk to us. We want to be their second home away from home.”
Talk about a recruiting pitch, folks. Waxed mullet and all, Gundy pitches recruiting into a football family — something recruits consistently get the vibe of when they visit Stillwater — because it’s comfortable. As soon as a mother or father of a recruit hear they’ll be taken care of and treated like a family member, it’s enough to at least perk the ears up a little.
Don’t just take it from Gundy, either. Quarterback Mason Rudolph says he’s felt the family atmosphere from Gundy during his stint with OSU, and feels Gundy is a very relatable and personable person to everyone — including himself.
“He’s not just a CEO mentality,” said Rudolph. “He’s a guy that will come up and speak to you personally. Whether you’re in the hallway at the facility or watching film or on the practice field, he’s very outgoing. He’s a guy that cares about you not only as a player, but as a person.”
“The culture now is success … I think people from coast to coast respect #okstate football.” – @CoachGundy pic.twitter.com/sN2uOO5V0g
