100 Days of Summer: Get to Know No. 8 Braydon Johnson
The second of our 8s for today is the true freshman playmaker you aren’t talking about. But he’s rangy and fast and not short on star potential.
How he got to OSU
A three-star prospect out of Bowie High School (Arlington, Texas), Braydon Johnson chose the Cowboys over offers from Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Colorado State and others.
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound former track star is a high-ceiling prospect who would probably get a good shot at reps as a true freshman for most teams — and in many years for the Cowboys.
What he’s done in Stillwater
The 2017 signee was around for summer workouts and is finishing up fall camp. He’s looked good so far this preseason but Mike Gundy was impressed before he ever stepped foot on campus.
“Braydon Johnson can fly,” Gundy said after National Signing Day. “I doubt that he’ll run less than 4.4 or 4.5 once he’s been here a year. He allows us to take the top off the defense which is what we want to do anyway.”
Role in 2017
The coaching staff would like to redshirt Johnson and give him that extra full year under Rob Glass’ tutelage and in the meeting room. And with the star receivers OSU has competing for touches this year, there’s no reason to rush it. There will be reps up for grabs next fall with James Washington, Marcell Ateman and Chris Lacy all moving on.
Noteworthy stats and highlighs
Johnson tallied 1,261 all-purpose yards and nine touchdowns his senior year. He was Bowie’s leading receiver with 45 catches (729 yards) and averaged 25.3 yards per punt return and 30.5 yards per kickoff return.
Here’s a look at his high school film.
