Cameron Epps Wins Big 12 Newcomer of the Week Honors
Epps had two interceptions, including a pick-six on Friday.
Cameron Epps has been awarded more than the glory of victory for his two-interception effort against the Wildcats this past weekend.
Epps, a redshirt freshman safety, was named the Big 12’s Newcomer of the Week for his part in Oklahoma State’s 29-21 win against Kansas State. Epps had a pair of picks, including a pick-six, to go with his five tackles and two pass breakups against K-State, all while making just his second start.
“He played really well,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said Monday. “The thing that he did that’s getting everybody’s attention is he finishes plays. You’ll see young players that have a promising future at times be in the right spot, but if they don’t finish a play, we don’t talk about it as much. Either one of those balls, if he goes up and tries to intercept it and drops it or tips it away and he doesn’t make a big play, it’s not something that grabs as much attention. But he was able to finish those plays, which is a good sign.
“Most of the time, guys like that earlier in their career that have the ability to finish plays will do that throughout their career. We’re excited about where he’s at. He’s got a long ways to go.”
Listed at 6-foot-3, Epps hails from St. Louis and came to OSU as part of the Cowboys’ 2022 recruiting class. He was the No. 515 player in his class and chose OSU over offers from Arkansas, Kansas State, Michigan State, Kansas and others.
He played in four games before redshirting in 2022, where he recorded three tackles. Thus far this season, Epps has 19 tackles, two interceptions and three pass breakups.
Epps is the first OSU player to be featured in the Big 12 weekly awards this season.
