Commitment Primer: PG Isaac Likekele Picking Between OSU, UTEP and Texas Tech

Mike Boynton’s hot streak on the recruiting trail — landing forward Maurice Calloo on Thursday to go along with big man Kentrevious Jones and grad transfer Mike Cunningham, all of whom have committed over the last month — could continue on Friday as the coaching staff anxiously awaits the decision of 2018 point guard prospect Isaac Likekele.

Likekele, who is a top-10 Texas prospect for the class of 2018 and as the No. 147 player in that class would be OSU’s top recruit, visited Oklahoma State last weekend on an official basis. He will decide Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. between OSU, Texas Tech and UTEP, with both 247Sports crystal ball votes currently in favor of the Red Raiders.

Going into the OSU visit, I got the sense that Texas Tech was the favorite. Not only do they have geography on their side (Likekele is from Mansfield Timberview High School in Texas; Stillwater is closer, but Lubbock is, obviously in the same state), but Tech also (potentially) has early playing time to offer, similar to Oklahoma State.

But after the OSU visit, I think things may have switched. Here’s a ? quote from him after the visit.

“Oklahoma State was another really good visit, I really enjoyed the location and how everything close is a plus,” Likekele told TheTB5Reports. “What I like about Coach Boynton is he’s the same type of guy I am, he was doubted by everyone when he got the job, had a great year and proved them wrong. That’s basically the same mindset I’m taking to college with me.”

Boynton has proven himself to be an A+ recruiter over the last few months, and it’s undeniable at this point that recruits connect with him in ways they don’t typically with head coaches. In Likekele’s case, I think that absolutely holds true — and it holds a lot of weight as he nears a decision.

Things could always change last minute, but I’m hearing that OSU made a huge impression to help sway the 6-foot-4 point guard in favor of America’s Brightest Orange. Good news could be on its way soon.

Prediction: Oklahoma State
