Context Clues

To understand how impressive the new baseball stadium is, you have to consider how far the money invested in the structure would go if otherwise invested.

Nothing embodies that as much as this baseball complex. The stadium itself will cost $60 million, but with the land and auxiliary costs, the total bill will be $75 million.

To put that in context, what we now know as The Peake was originally built for $90 million. Yes, tens of millions more have been spent to upgrade the arena over the years, but that facility in downtown Oklahoma City came into being for only $15 million more than this college baseball field.

Raising $40 million for a college baseball field would’ve been a heck of an accomplishment.

But $75 million? Wowza. [NewsOK]

Time value of money, the upgrades, and differences in funding (private vs. public) should qualify the number but my goodness: $75m on a non-revenue sports shows serious commitment.

When Star Goes Dim

With the change to the 4-2-5, Kenneth Edison-McGruder will enjoy the change more than an Eddie Sutton big man project at the Sirloin Stockade.

The switch has Edison-McGruder primed for what could be the most productive season of his career, after a junior campaign hindered by injuries. As a sophomore, Edison-McGruder thrived at mostly safety, starting four games, making 40 tackles and recovering a fumble.

But he missed four games last season and only started five, despite entering the year as the projected starter at star linebacker. While he had an 82-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the season opener against Tulsa, he finished the year with only 21 tackles.

The move back to safety, and Knowles’ philosophy for an in-your-face defense, have Edison-McGruder charged up this spring. [TulsaWorld]

KEM stands to benefit the same way guys like Shaun Lewis and Josh Furman did from the configuration of the STAR backer position.
