The Third Triplet

Justice Hill feels a bit overlooked (while still being preseason All Big 12) with his Heisman-candidate QB and stable of receivers – but he shouldn’t be.

He broke out in his first start in Week 4, when he ran for 122 yards on 20 carries against Baylor . He ran for 135 yards against Texas the next week and posted 162 yards against Kansas, 126 yards against Texas Tech and 154 yards against TCU. He rumbled for 100 yards in the Alamo Bowl win over Colorado.

But Hill wasn’t satisfied. He felt his blocking was unacceptable, so he focused on it in the offseason.

“It’s really just knowing your assignment and owning it, going full speed,” he said. “Last year I was thinking a lot, and now it just comes natural, and I’m able to get where I need to be.” [Associated Press]

For a running game that was grabbing straws, those numbers were water on scorched earth. And to think he’s playing more “natural” now!

No Knuckleheads Allowed

Teams win a lot of games with talent – they win championships when it’s a part of a good culture with solid leadership. The 2017 Cowboys are a solid combination of the two.

“Sometimes you’ve got a bunch of knuckleheads and you go home at night and you’re like, ‘I don’t even think they know what the hell’s going on. I’ve gotta go play in 10 days and these guys don’t even know bed check,’ ” Gundy said. “Not with a mature group like this.

“I think there are a lot of guys that can coach football. There are a lot of guys that can draw up good plays. What separates coaches is when they understand the team has to do it. I mean, they’re the ones that are gonna play.

“I don’t foresee that being an issue.” [TulsaWorld]

Citing cultural stalwarts like Jerel Morrow, Tre Flowers and Chad Whitener, there’s some solid locker room leaders to go with dudes handpicked to fit the Cowboy culture. It appears that’s what makes them fun to coach – and even more fun to watch.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Hard to agree that OSU has the 80th happiest fan base in CFB….James Washington is a top-five most interesting non-QB player….SportsOnEarth has the Pokes in the Cotton Bowl – a trendy pick of late….Austin Statesman raved about the OSU triplets

Collect your winnings if you thought Jimmy Bean would be the Denton Guyer product still in the league (over J.W. Walsh and Josh Stewart).

Can do sunsets without OSU orange.

Washington getting some love.

Prayers for an ailing Cowboy.

Pray for Ohio. And has there ever been a more expected dislike than Chick-Fil-A and California not meshing well?
