Daily Bullets (Feb. 3): Gundy Fills a Big Hole on the Depth Chart, Small Offensive Improvement = Big Rewards

Published

Congrats to the Chiefs on the win – always love this piece looking at the recruiting stars of the big players in the game (Tyreek makes an appearance).

Bullets Rundown

• Realistic improvement for OSU’s offense
• Gundy filled a big hole on the depth chart
• Wozniak doesn’t fill his

Scores

• Wrestling: Pokes 26, Mizzou 6

OSU Bullets

• What’s a realistic amount of improvement to expect from the Cowboy (football) offense in 2020?

OSU finished 20th nationally with 454 YPG, but scored 32.5 PPG which was second lowest of the top-20 YPG finishers. I expect averages closer to 475 YPG and 37 PPG in 2020 given the experience and depth present. [Yahoo Sports]

It’s fair to expect improvement, right? To understand the significance of a hop like that, OSU would move from the 35th highest-scoring offense to 14th with that kind of improvement.

• The Cowboy defense replaced its biggest hole over the weekend.

According to Pulitzer-worthy reporter, Chuba Hubbard, (former Missouri defensive back Christian) Holmes has committed to OSU after his visit to Stillwater over the weekend. Hubbard sent this out via Instagram, encouraging Cowboy fans to welcome Holmes to the family.

A source told Pistols Firing that Holmes has committed, and he is immediately eligible following his stint in Columbia. [PFB]

While Aaron Cochran-esque would probably be too far, a tandem of an experienced back like Holmes and the talented sophomore-to-be Thomas Harper has to be considered a suitable replacement for the talented AJ Green.

Recruiting a running back for the 2020 class has been incredibly disappointing – and now appears to be a lost cause.

…(T)he two targets the Cowboys had their eye on chose other schools, with Corey Wren of Harvey, Louisiana, picking Florida State and Kevontre Bradford of Lancaster, Texas, going to LSU.

With that, the Cowboys ran out of good options. And though Zach Middleton of Tulsa Kelley is a smaller guy at 5-foot-9 and 190 pounds, coach Mike Gundy is excited about Middleton’s ability with the ball in his hands.

So it looks like the Pokes are finished recruiting running backs for the 2020 class. [NewsOK]

God makes lots (and lots) of talented running backs every year. Two-star ones, three-star ones, and more. They’re a lot easier to find than athletic defensive linemen. For OSU to not agree to terms with one is a disappointment.

To OSU’s rescue are returnees Chuba Hubbard and LD Brown and redshirt freshman Deondrick Glass. But if Wozniak keeps this up, you’ll have another Greg Adkins scenario on hand with a seriously depleted depth chart.

Bonus comment: I’d love to see what kind of Lousiana talent Jamaal Fobbs could bring to Stillwater.

• On a disappointing note – it’s hard to disagree with this. Those early TCU teams in the Big 12 (pre-Jamie Dixon) were dismal. Tech under Pat Knight was rough. But this team’s record is Kansas football-bad at this point.

• Congrats to our boy Southwell (friend of the blog and friend) on making his tv debut.

• This is wild – former Cowboy walkon goes to Marshall then transfers to OU.

Non-OSU Bullets

• Why is it hard to make friends after 30? (NYT)
• Solid NBA trade deadline primer with the date approaching – Marcus Smart notes included
• Good 2019-2020 synopsis on basketball in Oklahoma (OSU, OU down, OKC up)
• Great (convicting) faith-based article looking at entertainment and purpose
