Overcoming the Odds

New Oklahoma State quarterback Dru Brown has a track record of overcoming odds and climbing depth charts – a trend to watch as he sets his sights this summer.

“It’s frustrating because certain guys, if you don’t hit the measurables, they won’t even talk to you about ’em,” (Brown’s high school coach) told The Athletic. “And Dru is special. He’s a special competitor, and he’s got that ‘it’ factor that I really love. I’ve coached bigger guys with stronger arms, but boy, on a Friday night in our games, I want that guy on my side for sure.”

At College of San Mateo, Brown beat out 6-foot-2 and 6-foot-4 quarterbacks to secure the starting job. That job required operating a triple-option attack. Brown doesn’t call himself a dual-threat player, but he can move around a bit. Though he chipped in less than 200 rushing yards in that offense, he made it work in accounting for 27 total touchdowns and earning team MVP honors.

Hawaii coach Nick Rolovich had seen Brown compete at a Nevada football camp years earlier and took a chance on him as a late signee in June 2016. Brown backed up senior Ikaika Woolsey to start the season and made his debut in the second half of a 63-3 blowout loss at Michigan. His first career pass attempt in The Big House — and his introduction to big-time football — was a 51-yard pick-six.

But Brown kept throwing and kept fighting. And by the end of September, he was named Hawaii’s starter. [The Athletic]

Brown – a hotly recruited grad-transfer with offers from LSU, Tennessee, Baylor and Washington State – appears to have the ears and eyes of decision makers at this point in time.

Sidebar: our Thomas F. thinks he’ll fit in just fine with the Cowboy offense.

Trading Spaces

While last night’s loss puts hope on ice, opportunity still abounds in the Big 12.

Oklahoma State now owns four Quadrant 1 wins (albeit, with a 4-8 overall record). Among the teams that make up the current bubble, Providence has six and Washington and Texas have five. Virginia Tech, Kansas State and North Carolina State have four. Others (Houston, St. Bonaventure, USC, UCLA, Syracuse, Boise State) have three or fewer.

Combine that with the fact four of OSU’s final six games — at TCU, Texas Tech, at Texas, Kansas — are Quadrant 1 games, and Oklahoma State has the opportunity to make the tournament in front of it. Its other two games — including Wednesday’s home tilt with Kansas State — slide in as Quadrant 2 games at the moment. [TulsaWorld]

Winning on the road seems to be a thing for this team, a couple of those opportunities still exist against solid squads.

Kaylee Jensen is ballin’.

A neat gesture for an incredible man, my prayers and thoughts are with Dr. Hermann and his family.

For the love of Pete, let’s all hope Trae Young listens to Lebron.

A thing of beauty.
