Daily Bullets (July 24): How Good was OSU’s 2019 Golf Team?

Published

With the football players reporting next week in Stillwater, the end is near and football is lurking.

Bullets Rundown

• How good was OSU’s 2019 golf team?
• Tylan Wallace vs. Ceedee Lamb
• OSU’s offensive line depth

OSU Bullets

How good were the individuals on the 2019 Cowboy Golf team? OKC Dave looks at the numbers using Sagarin’s rankings – and they are staggering.

2019: Oklahoma State (No. 1 Viktor Hovland and No. 2 Matthew Wolff)
By the way, OSU also had four players in the top 40: Hovland & Wolff plus No. 14 Austin Eckroat and No. 36 Zach Bauchou. Not bad.

Here’s something that makes the Hovy/Wolff tandem a little more impressive, though. They weren’t just the two best players in 2019. They are the two best players over the last 20 years of college golf. [PFB]

• When you compare OSU receiver Tylan Wallace to OU receiver Ceedee Lamb, who is more likely to have a better season?

Wallace in 2019 could become the fifth state receiver in this decade to record a single-season total of at least 100 catches. It was done in 2010 by OU’s Ryan Broyles, in 2010 and 2011 by OSU’s Justin Blackmon, in 2012 by OSU’s Josh Stewart and in 2014 by TU’s Keevan Lucas.

While Lamb is a tremendous receiver – and might now be OU’s best player, regardless of position – Jalen Hurts has at his disposal a great number of options. As the Sooners have playmakers all over the field, Wallace is clearly defined as OSU’s top target. [TulsaWorld]

I didn’t know how big of a deal that 100 catch number was but I agree that whoever wins the QB job in Stillwater (cough* Spencer Sanders *cough) will lean heavily on Wallace.

• Offensive line coach Charlie Dickey is well aware of how well he’s been set up for success in Stillwater.

“I’ll just piggy back on what you are saying, I thought that Josh Henson did a phenomenal job and a great job and made my job easier much easier,” Dickey said. “He recruited well and coached these guys up well. I’m excited about both these young groups, the red-shirt freshmen and the freshmen that just came in here. They are good kids and they work hard. I don’t have any reservations about playing guys early. I’m going to try to play the best guys and get them ready.” [GoPokes]

Stocking the depth chart not only with full line changes of recruits but also with guys like Bryce Bray and Hunter Anthony tees up Dickey for a coaching job, not miracle-working.

• I’m a sucker for campus pictures.

• Fitzgerald is onto something for sure but it’s probably not the best look in recruiting – kudos for still going there.

Non-OSU Bullets

• This Ringer piece has me hyped for the Thunder’s (young) new point guard

• Airlines are fixing the middle seat issue – while we’re here: the guy who had an unlimited, fly-anywhere American Airlines pass

Big fan of the new Thunder jerseys for the bombing memorial.
