Has the player empowerment era arrived in college football? What Chuba Hubbard did says it might be.

…(W)hile we might not see Hubbard protest this season, the event as a whole showed a major shift in the world of college athletes. According to ESPN analyst Marcus Spears, Hubbard showed that players are evolving with how they handle situations involving their superiors.

“I like the fact that players are evolving in college. I like the fact that they’re calling coaches out and holding them to task, especially in this climate that we’re in,” Spears said on SportsCenter on Tuesday. “…It was offensive to (Hubbard) and what his belief systems are…” [247 Sports]

Until players are completely financially independent of their coaches (via the ability to earn money or their likeness or impending NFL money in Chuba’s case), it’s hard to imagine players taken too strong of a stance. The transfer portal sure helps the player’s case.

• A national recruiting analyst (who tends to be in the know) points out this may be the best recruiting job Mike Boynton’s done to keep (most) of his squad together… and a lean towards the big dog coming.

It was widely expected for Oklahoma State to be hit with a number of departures in the wake of the NCAA’s sanctions, but that has not happened. (Update: Yor Anei and Hidde Roessink have decided to transfer) This goes to show the strength of the culture Boynton has built within the Cowboys program.

Right now, it appears that everyone will be returning to Stillwater, but there could be one or two that decide to transfer before all is said and done. More importantly, based on what I have heard, the expectation right now is that Cade Cunningham will still be enrolling. [Rivals]

• The Ringer has Marcus Smart as their No. 4 on-ball defender in the NBA – enjoy the excerpt below about his defensive prowess.

What a magnificent heel Smart has turned out to be—in every moment an agitator, competitor, and victim simultaneously. He is strong as hell but will use an opponent’s strength against them. He will fight for position until the moment he loses it, only to then poke the ball loose. It’s rare to find a defender with a mind not only for the nuances of team defense, but also the charged dynamics of one-on-one basketball. [The Ringer]

With Marcus Smart taking over as the resident Cowboy defender in the NBA taking the mantle from Tony Allen, the Pokes will have almost 20 years of defensive mastery by the time Smart’s run is through.

• I’m not sure who Doug’s sources are but I’ll ingest any rumor I can that Cade’s leaning towards staying.

Great tweet here keeping track of Mike Boynton’s Cowboys who are committed to returning – I think you can note that Bryce Williams will return having committed after the scandal:
