Mr. 5,000
ESPN thinks Mason has a good shot to pass a rare mile marker in 2017.
Rudolph is the league’s only returning 4,000-yard passer after tossing for 4,091 yards in 2016.
Not only should Rudolph be able to repeat that performance, he could threaten the 5,000-yard threshold, given that he’ll be operating with what might be the best receiving corps in college football. [ESPN]
5,000 yards passing has been done ten times over the last decade, mostly by system guys from places like Texas Tech and Houston. Neither 2008 Sam Bradford nor 2011 Weeden broke 4,800, Rudolph would cement his all-time status passing 5k.
Promising Developments
We won’t have a clue until September, but Robert Allen reports the secondary is developing well in summer workouts.
The young corners of Roderick Williams, A.J. Green, and Madre Harper are looking good. I thought that in the spring and I think it even more now. Adrian Baker has jumped in and that is excellent as it has allowed Darius Curry to become a float playing both corner and safety as experienced depth is light behind strong safety Tre’ Flowers and free safety Ramon Richards.
It is all taking shape pretty good and, in my opinion, pretty fast. Coaches on the back end of the defense in safeties coach Dan Hammerschmidt and corners coach Tim Duffie have been patient, yet at the same time, adamant about improvement and accountability. Baker looks like he has melted into the fabric of Oklahoma State football in a hurry. [GoPokes $]
Pulling a veteran out of the corner rotation (at least partially) seems risky, but moving your only returning starter at corner over lets you know the state of the depth chart at safety. Compared to where we’re headed, a tough question we’ll see play out is would you rather have Ramon and Baker (the Clemson transfer) at corner and raw talent at safety?
