Not Exceeding but Meeting Expectations

Mike Boynton put his finger on the two most challenging things for the next Cowboy team.

“I already told the guys returning next year that next year’s going to be much harder than this year,” Boynton said Wednesday. “ … Now, people expect us to be competitive again.

“When you’ve got to perform the way people think you should, it’s a different ballgame.”

So there’s the first: taking a new group of guys and at the minimum meeting expectations of a team on the rise more than one that makes the Titanic seem like it’s got a better chance of staying above water.

“We’re on the right guys,” he said Wednesday. “That’s what it’s about. You’ve got to have the talent, and there were times this year we didn’t have quite as much talent, and we still were able to compete, but we’ll get better talent and we’ll be even more competitive and we’ll have more success.” [NewsOK]

And the other challenge is putting enough talent on the floor to give them a shot of meeting these newly built expectations.

4-Two-5

While a new defensive coordinator will bring plenty of fodder for conversation, what Jim Knowles decides to do with the linebacker position will be perhaps the most interesting.

Though OSU lost veteran leader Chad Whitener to graduation, Knowles inherits a pair of proven performers at outside linebacker in Justin Phillips and Calvin Bundage. The two combined for 118 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks a year ago. In Kenneth Edison-McGruder, he has a capable third option as well. Kevin Henry returns from injury and Devin Harper could also factor into the rotation.

One of the early decisions Knowles will have to make is what he wants to do with the middle linebacker position this spring, because there is no obvious candidate to step in and fill the void left by Whitener’s graduation. [OKState.com]

Getting your best athletes on the field is the name of the game and while Glenn Spencer wasn’t retained, he retained a three deep full of talent in the linebacker pool. How he gets Patrick Macon (good piece by Luke on him here), Kevin Henry, and Co. onto the field will be interesting when you’ve only got two spots for linebackers.

Pokes lost the series-clincher in Austin yesterday.

Warmest congratulations to Olivia winning her battle.

This seems impressive.
