Still Relatively Unknown, Patrick Macon Looks to add to OSU’s Depth in 2018

When Glenn Spencer was given the boot, hopefully he got a thank you, as well. Patrick Macon, perhaps Spencer’s biggest under-the-radar recruit, is set to make his debut for Oklahoma State in 2018.

Macon, who redshirted last season, transferred from Arizona Western College before sitting out last season. If his measurements and previous accolades mean anything, he looks to be a stud for the Cowboys this year.

He was named the National Junior College Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year in 2016, as he recorded 122 tackles and nine sacks. He also led the nation with 27.5 tackles for loss and nine forced fumbles.

Macon was the leader of a defense that was among the nation’s best in 2016. Arizona Western ranked in the nation’s top five in rushing defense, passing defense and surrendered a mere 8 points per game in the regular season.

Here’s a look at some of his highlights. His heavy hitting sticks out immediately, and his passion and enthusiasm on the field is apparent.

Standing at 6-foot-3, 235 pounds, Macon is the prototypical size for an inside linebacker. But Jim Knowles’ needs in OSU’s base 4-2-5 defense might require something different.

Our own Adam Lunt predicts Calvin Bundage will move to the edge, essentially acting as a defensive end. Justin Phillips likely has one of the linebacker spots locked down, so that leaves one starting spot for Macon, Kenneth Edison-McGruder, Kevin Henry, Devin Harper or Amen Ogbongbemiga.

Remember, that will just be for their base defense. There will be formations where the Cowboys use more than two linebackers.

Not to be forgotten, and as we saw last season, injuries can happen at any time. Luckily, OSU has a plethora of talented players at the position. Macon will add to that depth and perhaps see some time as the starter, and he’s definitely someone to keep an eye on during the spring game.
