The recent surge of success in the battle against Texas has been relatively bizarre given the history of the programs.

Before 2010, OSU had a 12-game losing streak against Texas. With a win this week, the Cowboys would be 6-2 against the Longhorns during this decade. Also, it would be a fifth consecutive OSU victory in Austin. In games played in Austin, no other program ever has recorded more than three consecutive victories over Texas.

It’s a mind-boggling stat, considering the history of the series.

By the end of a 2009 blowout loss to the Longhorns, Gundy was winless in five head-coaching meetings with Texas. At that time, Oklahoma State was 2-22 all-time against Texas. [TulsaWorld]

The same uniforms that Vince Young, Jamaal Charles and Ricky Williams donned haven’t seen the Longhorns defend the home turf in Austin since 2008 when Colt McCoy was throwing heaves to some guy who was his roommate.

Bye Bye Bye

Pointed out recently by Guerin Emig of the TulsaWorld, the Big 12 title game will earn the league millions but it cost each member a bye week. How will that figure into a championship?

They could have put a steel cage around Oklahoma-Texas. How about the energy West Virginia spent to rally past Texas Tech? Oklahoma State cruised past Baylor on the scoreboard, but still saw linebacker Kenneth Edison-McGruder carried off the field.

Is it possible this year’s Big 12 race is more a survival of the healthiest? [TulsaWorld]

More pointedly I like how Coach Gundy said it:

“If we lose guys at the wrong positions, we can go from being a great offense to a good offense or a great defense to an average defense just based on personnel. That’s just the way it works.” [TulsaWorld]

I think we’ve seen the impact injuries have had, specifically on the linebacking corp and offensive line units – who has the best team in the league December 2nd will be fascinating.

Playoff Odds

CBS had some thoughts on the 14 teams thought to be playoff worthy. The Pokes round out the top ten.

The Cowboys lost at home to TCU and do not have a big nonconference win, but they do get Oklahoma at home and, if they win that, likely another shot at the Frogs in the Big 12 title game. 5-1 | 11.2 percent [CBS Sports]

It’s a good reality check to see what (educated) outsiders think of the program and around ten percent odds seem favorable for this point in the season.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Can Stanford’s Bryce Love catch Barry Sanders‘ epic season?….Brett McMurphy talked to 40 AD’s to find out what really influences their personnel decisions….CFB’s top 25 most memorable gifs from the first half of the season….ESPN’s crew picks Big 12 games this week

Washington could sit out the rest of the season with a tummy ache and be a first, second round pick based off what he’s done so far.

This is the kind of stuff that makes fall fun.

Is Tennessee sniffing #FireFord territory?

Pokes will see two of these over the next few weeks – shoutout to Rodarius Williams’ brother for making the list.
