Stillwater’s Finest

At least educated opinion thinks 2017 may be Gundy’s best team.

Over the hum of the idling team buses, (Tulsa coach Philip) Montgomery stopped for a minute to appraise and praise the prospects of this particular Cowboys team. And he didn’t hold back: “I’ve played them a bunch and they’ve had some talented groups,” Montgomery told Yahoo Sports. “This group overall talent wise is the best I’ve seen [at Oklahoma State]. They’ve got a lot of balance in their receivers and an NFL quarterback.”

With that comment, the Summer of Mike Gundy officially – and mercifully – shifted to the Autumn of the Underrated Cowboys. [Yahoo Sports]

Montgomery coached against the Cowboys annually from 2008 to 2014 – and he thinks this is the most talented roster.

Long and Short Of It

Loved this tidbit from CBS’ Dennis Dodds on OSU’s playoff hopes.

Oklahoma State: The Big 12 champ (sez me) has the offense to score itself to an undefeated regular season. [CBS Sports]

That begs the question: stare at that defensive two-deep looking for all-conference players on every level – but does it really matter? Assuming the opponents aren’t playing 11-on-air, if you can push a button and score it will, you have to consider how much having the 40th vs 20th defense really matters.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Five best games to watch this weekend (and five best-upset chances)…Best opening weekend games of the BCS era….College football assistants make more than university presidents….An informal history of Gundy’s mullet

All the smiley faces.

Sounds like a good day one at the Carmel Cup.

Gregg Marshall taking on the Pokes on national TV.

Bet Dad takes it easy on him watching film after this right?

That’s the kind of guy we need on the CFP committee someday.
