Five-Star Guard Tyrese Maxey Commits to Kentucky Over Oklahoma State

Five-star combo guard Tyrese Maxey, the No. 13 prospect in the 2019 class and the second-rated point guard in the classification, has announced he will play his college ball at Kentucky.

“One thing that really stuck out to me is that I have been rooting for Kentucky since I was younger,” Maxey told 247. “I wanted to go to Kentucky and I liked watching coach Cal coach and ever since he coached Derrick Rose I was a fan of Coach Cal.

“I feel like if you ever get an opportunity to live the dream and achieve the school that you have been watching and rooting for and the opportunity presents itself and it’s a good look for you and the coach then I feel like you should take it and run with it so that’s what I did.”

He picked the Wildcats over finalists Michigan State, Michigan, Texas and OSU.

Maxey considered reclassifying to 2018, making him eligible for the upcoming college season, but he will instead stay in the 2019 class. That 2018 reclassification was originally one of the big appeals for OSU, which is still seeking guard help for the upcoming season.

He’ll instead join an already-loaded Kentucky recruiting class that also boasts five-star guard Ashton Hagans, a 2019 prospect (who many believe could eventually reclassify) and four-star small forward D.J. Jeffries. Three of the top 31 players in the country so far (for 2019!)

Meanwhile, OSU continues to await a decision from recent visitor Isaac Likekele, who made a trip to OSU last weekend. He announced Tuesday that he will commit on Friday afternoon.
