Gundy Tells ESPN, ‘I Was a Dumbass’ Regarding OAN T-Shirt

Gundy and Hubbard open up about the wild past few days.

For the third consecutive day, Mike Gundy spoke about the One America News Network shirt he was photographed in recently.

ESPN released snippets from documentary-style interviews Gundy and running back Chuba Hubbard on Wednesday. In the description it says the interviews are part of an ESPN+ original series coming in the fall. That could mean OSU is getting a Miles to Go kind of deal that Les Miles and Kansas got last year. Anyway onto the actual quotes. The full video is posted below.

Gundy

“I didn’t know some of the stances they [OAN] had taken,” Gundy said. “I didn’t know that. But then you look at it and say, ‘OK, I was a dumbass.’  I put the shirt on, not knowing enough about the shirt.

“I understand exactly why the players got frustrated when they found that out,” Gundy said. “I didn’t know. I didn’t know until the next day. Well, I knew that night, but I didn’t confirm it until I did a little research, and I was like, ‘What a dumbass.’ So, that was my fault.”

“The way the players feel about me, and I upset them and broke their heart, that bothered me more than losing games,” Gundy said. “That’s the truth, but that’s why now, as humans, when we make mistakes, the only thing we can do is admit we’re wrong, own up to it, be humble, accept critical people, criticism, make it better and move forward.”

Hubbard

“I’m just always some one who wants to pride myself on doing the right thing and stand for the right reasons,” Hubbard said from what looked to be his apartment. “I’m not a politician. I’m not anything like that. I’m just someone who stands up for what’s right, and that’s all I was trying to do.”

“I heard from Coach Gundy later that day,” Hubbard said. “We talked for about two hours. Amen [Ogbongbemiga] was in here. He said some stuff, and I realized some people may be ignorant in a fact and some people may just not understand what’s going on or the seriousness of what’s going on. Some people need to be educated. Whether I can’t depict exactly what’s going on with him or whatever, I’m going to do my best to educate him and do my best to make Oklahoma State a better program for all athletes. That’s all I’m trying to do.”

“I’m in a position right now where I have to act fast, and I have to do something right, and I feel like he may feel the same way,” Hubbard said. “Obviously we’re in two different positions, but right now it’s really up to him if he wants to make things right or not.”

There is a lot to expand on from this. It’s not often Gundy is seen in this type of one-on-one scenario, and it’s not often people get that type of access to a Gundy-led program. The potential documentary could be a cool deal for OSU, especially if even more good comes out of this.

Finally, Hubbard sounds awesome, the type of quotes any fan should want their star player giving. And Gundy was contrite in a relatable way. It’s a good look for the Pokes in a week where they’ve badly needed it.
