Jeffrey Carroll, Mitchell Solomon Earn All-Big 12 Honors
With the regular season in the books, the Big 12’s awards and honors have been announced and senior Jeffrey Carroll earned all-conference honors for the second straight year.
Carroll was named to the All-Big 12 third team by the coaches. His 15.1 points per game comes in 12th in the league and his 5.9 rebounds is 11th. He earned three double-doubles as a senior. Once against Tulsa and in both Bedlam games. He’ll got a chance to make that three on Wednesday night, when the 8th-seeded Cowboys face the 9th-seeded Sooners in the first game of the Big 12 Tournament.
The AP All-Big 12 selections came out on Tuesday, and both Carroll and fellow senior Mitchell Solomon were named honorable mentions.
Solomon’s box score numbers may not jump off the sheet to anyone — he averaged 8.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.1 blocks. But he was the Cowboys’ best defender and someone who Mike Boynton called his team MVP. He was talking about Solomon’s leadership on the court and in the locker room but a case could be made for him as one of OSU’s most crucial players based on some advanced stats. He leads the Cowboys both in box plus/minus and win shares.
League-Wide Honors (Big 12 Coaches)
Kansas guard Devonte Graham was named Player of the Year with Coach of the Year being a split decision between Kansas’ Bill Self, who just won his 14th-straight conference title and Texas Tech’s Chris Beard, who captained the Red Raiders to a surprise 23-8 finish and a No. 2 rank in the conference. Oklahoma’s Trae Young won Freshman of the Year.
