The Cowboys have picked up a second Big 12 transfer from the Sunflower State, and he too has experience with Eric Morris.

Tyler Mercer is a 6-foot-4, 300-pound center who played at Kansas this past season but spent 2024 at North Texas with Oklahoma State’s new coach. 247Sports’ Chris Hummer reported the news of Mercer’s commitment.

On3 considers Mercer the No. 185 player in the transfer portal and the No. 11 interior portal lineman.

He played in three games for the Jayhawks this season, maintaining a redshirt. That means he’ll have three years of eligibility remaining.

Mercer made six starts as a true freshman at North Texas. On3 named him a Freshman All-American, and he was named the Dave Campbell Texas Football Offensive Freshman of the Year.

In Mercer’s 44 offensive snaps this season, PFF graded him out at a 66.5 with a 78 in pass blocking. He allowed no pressures in 11 opportunities, per PFF.

He played 565 snaps at center in 2024 for UNT, giving up no sacks and just three pressures in 359 opportunities.

Mercer hails from Prosper, Texas, where he was a three-star prospect in the 2024 recruiting class. He chose UNT over offers from Tulane, Texas State, San Diego State, James Madison, UNLV and others.

He’s the fourth O-lineman Eric Morris and Co. have picked from the portal since it opened, with the other three all coming from North Texas in Desmond Magiuya, Braydon Nelson and Johnny Dickson. All of those guys will be familiar with Mercer, as all were still at North Texas when he was there in 2024.
