Mike Tomlin Had Dinner with Two Cowboys While in Town

Oklahoma State held its Pro Day on Thursday in Stillwater, welcoming all 32 NFL teams. It appears that representatives from one team in particular made a special trip.

The number of scouts in attendance should be no surprise, given the plethora of playmakers (and record-setters) at both quarterback and wide receiver. Not to mention the solid contributors all around the field that make up this star-studded draft class.

But there was one NFL team that made a particular (and possibly telling) visit to Stillwater on Thursday.

Oklahoma State did make it easier on draft evaluators, scheduling theirs in close proximity to another in-state school. Like it or not, Baker Mayfield — the Heisman trophy winner and most polarizing football player in America — was participating in his own Pro Day just 80 miles south and one day earlier. This year, OSU had plenty of talent to draw all NFL teams, but it makes for a convenient two-day trip.

But while Baker was rocking a Karate Kid-esque headband and spinning it in Norman, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin spent his Wednesday in Blacksburg, Virginia getting a look at Tremaine Edmunds during Virginia Tech’s Pro Day according to NFL.com.

On Wednesday night, he was in Oklahoma, having dinner with a couple of former Pokes. According to a report by draft analyst Tony Pauline, Tomlin had dinner with both James Washington and Tre Flowers the night before their pro day.

Washington might make sense for Pittsburgh, a team who is obviously not afraid of his sub-6 foot stature while Antonio Brown continues to build his case to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. The team also had a formal sitdown with the Biletnikoff winner during the combine.

On Thursday, Tomlin and Steelers GM Kevin Colbert were also tuned in to Mason Rudolph.

What’s more, Tomlin and Colbert apparently spurned Josh Rosen’s Pro Day at UCLA which was also held on Thursday.

Future Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger is, at least, eyeing retirement over the next couple of years. A similar QB, at least in stature and build, might seem like an obvious fit for Pittsburgh.

After drills, Rudolph was asked which teams he had met with and the Cowboys’ all-time leading passer played coy as usual. But he did acknowledge that he spoke with the Steelers’ brass.

“You know, we just talked about the process and obviously we played a game at their place up there this year and got to experience their stadium, but just saying goodbye and looking forward to speaking to all the teams,” said Rudolph.

Rudolph has no shortage of confidence in himself and apparently no angst over how he might measure up against a group of sought-after QBs.

“Whether I came out there and did a poor job or whether I came out there I killed it — which I did — it’s all about what you put on film and what you are when you strap the pads on.”
