National Media Reacts to Cade Cunningham’s OSU Commitment

All the Vince McMahon memes.

There were congratulatory tweets, stunned tweets, and in the case of Pat Forde, sour grapes tweets. Every spectrum was hit on Tuesday night as five-star recruit Cade Cunningham committed to Oklahoma State over Kentucky, Florida and others.

Here’s a look at how the masses reacted to the big news that shook the college basketball world. Let’s start with ESPN.

This is a monumental commitment for Boynton and the Cowboys, the program’s first five-star prospect since Marcus Smart in 2012 and the highest-ranked pledge for Oklahoma State since the ESPN recruiting database began in 2007.

Boynton is hoping Cunningham is the centerpiece to an elite recruiting class, as the elite guard joins top-50 point guard Rondel Walker in the Cowboys’ 2020 class. Oklahoma State also has five-star guard Bryce Thompson visiting Stillwater on Wednesday unofficially, and hosted top-50 power forward J.T. Thor for an official visit in early September. [ESPN]

Next, here’s an excerpt from 247 insider Brian Snow (minus the Vince McMahon images.)

Cunningham is the type of player who should be a huge addition. Sure, he is going to remind some of Simmons, because he is a big point guard who isn’t an adept outside shooter, and he attends Montverde Academy, but they are also very different. [247Sports]

While Simmons was always seen a bit mercurial by teammates, Cunningham is largely extremely popular. He is a leader on and off the court and seems more invested in being a college basketball player than Simmons was. [247Sports]

Given that Oklahoma State isn’t exactly one player away from winning a national title … [247Sports]

… even a player as talented as Cunningham, expecting a Final Four is a bit much … [247Sports]

… but none the less he can definitely help lift things in Stillwater to the level that once was seen under Eddie Sutton. [247Sports]

What these people don’t realize is that Boynton landed a top 25 class who are all freshmen now.

Yor and Ice are also quality D1 players.

Adding Cunningham, Walker, Thor, and hopefully Thompson definitely makes this team a final four contender in 2020-2021.

If you guys need an entertaining read I’d suggest making your way over to rupp rafters. The Kentucky tears over there are absolutely embarrassing. Absolute gold over there.

Holy cow there are some evil responses in there. They have every right to be proud of their program but there are folks wishing injury on Cade. I expected frustration and anger but not some straight up evil

I’ve been over there several times. It’s both hilarious and pathetic.

The Kentucky guys I’ve talked to on reddit even admit that website is embarrassing and has the worst fans on it. I want to make an account just to clown them but I think you have to pay unfortunately.

They display a complete lack of knowledge about college basketball in general. UK blinders in the extreme. It’s a whole crazy stew of conspiracy theories, extreme sour grapes, jealousy masquerading as pride, and overall douchebaggery. I had to stop reading eventually.

“Cunningham doesn’t turn OSU into a title contender”. Well no… but him along with Walker, possibly Thompson and Thor, paired with what will be experienced talent like Ice, Yor, the Boones, etc., certainly doesn’t seem like an easy team to beat.

Everyone hypes up star freshman, but more often than not in tournament time it’s the teams with veteran leadership that pull it out in crunch time. Look at UNC in 2017 and Virginia last year (there’s way more examples, I know), but those were teams that had talented freshmen supplemented by veterans that their coaches could trust when the lights were brightest.

I know seriously. If you just took everything From UK fans you’d think that Oklahoma State would be comprised of Cunningham and a bunch of YMCA kids.
