National Media Reacts to Cade Cunningham’s OSU Commitment
All the Vince McMahon memes.
There were congratulatory tweets, stunned tweets, and in the case of Pat Forde, sour grapes tweets. Every spectrum was hit on Tuesday night as five-star recruit Cade Cunningham committed to Oklahoma State over Kentucky, Florida and others.
Here’s a look at how the masses reacted to the big news that shook the college basketball world. Let’s start with ESPN.
This is a monumental commitment for Boynton and the Cowboys, the program’s first five-star prospect since Marcus Smart in 2012 and the highest-ranked pledge for Oklahoma State since the ESPN recruiting database began in 2007.
Boynton is hoping Cunningham is the centerpiece to an elite recruiting class, as the elite guard joins top-50 point guard Rondel Walker in the Cowboys’ 2020 class. Oklahoma State also has five-star guard Bryce Thompson visiting Stillwater on Wednesday unofficially, and hosted top-50 power forward J.T. Thor for an official visit in early September. [ESPN]
Next, here’s an excerpt from 247 insider Brian Snow (minus the Vince McMahon images.)
Cunningham is the type of player who should be a huge addition. Sure, he is going to remind some of Simmons, because he is a big point guard who isn’t an adept outside shooter, and he attends Montverde Academy, but they are also very different. [247Sports]
While Simmons was always seen a bit mercurial by teammates, Cunningham is largely extremely popular. He is a leader on and off the court and seems more invested in being a college basketball player than Simmons was. [247Sports]
Given that Oklahoma State isn’t exactly one player away from winning a national title … [247Sports]
… even a player as talented as Cunningham, expecting a Final Four is a bit much … [247Sports]
… but none the less he can definitely help lift things in Stillwater to the level that once was seen under Eddie Sutton. [247Sports]

A game changing pick-up for Mike Boynton and company. Said last week that Rondel Walker was just the beginning. More could be on the way. Ceiling was just raised tenfold for the program next season https://t.co/wUzwvayW6H
