NFL Hands Down Suspensions After Myles Garrett Melee

It didn’t take long for the NFL to come to a decision on the events of Thursday, specifically pertaining to Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett, who struck Mason Rudolph atop the head with his own helmet.

On Friday morning, the league office released a statement that outlined those penalties including fines for both the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers organizations and suspensions for three players: Garrett, Steelers OL Maurkice Pouncy, who retaliated against Garrett with punches and kicks, and Cleveland DL Larry Ogunjobi, who was part of the altercation and shoved Rudolph to the ground (without his helmet).

Here are the basics.

Myles Garrett — suspended without pay at a minimum for the rest of the regular season and postseason.

Maurkice Pouncy — suspended three games without pay.

Larry Ogunjobi — suspended for one game without pay for unnecessary roughness.

Garrett will also have to meet with the commissioner’s office before a decision can be made on his reinstatement, and he will be fined an undisclosed amount.

Both the Browns and the Steelers organizations will each be fined $250,000. There will be other disciplines for other players, including those who left the bench as part of the altercation but those details have yet to be announced.

As far as ramifications outside of the league’s scope, ESPN reports that Rudolph’s agent Tim Younger has not ruled out legal actions after the altercation.

“I am gathering all information and no options have been removed from the table,” Younger told ESPN.

Younger also tweeted this after the incident on Thursday night.

There are many risks an NFL QB assumes with every snap taken on the field. Being hit on your uncovered head by a helmet being swung by a 275 lb DE is not one of them. Tonight could have had a catastrophic ending. The matter will be reviewed thoroughly.
