Notebook: Oklahoma State Gives Up Most Points in a Game Since 1990

It wasn’t pretty in Norman on Wednesday, and we never really thought it would be as Trae Young continued his Naismith Award campaign with a near triple-double in OU’s 109-89 win over Oklahoma State. You can read my five thoughts here, but I had a few remaining notes in the notebook.

• How good would OSU be with Trae Young at point? That is a thought I’ve thought too many times over the past few weeks.

• If you’re an opposing team’s crowd and you’re not chanting “play-er-4, play-er-4” at Jeffrey Carroll, you’re doing it wrong.

• This might have been the high point of the game.

• Trae Young is so cocky, which makes him great. It also creates the effect that he’s better than he actually is which gets him double-teamed and makes him even better. Rough cycle for opponents.

• But I don’t get the no sideburns thing.

• This feels like the first real week of college hoops with football all over but the SEC love affair on Monday evening. I’m here for it.

• Dizzy’s 19 points and five 3-pointers were both career highs (obviously).

• OSU’s black numbers with white outline on the orange jerseys is absolutely fantastic. I guess it’s the same as it was on the old jerseys, but these look way better for some reason.

• Lawdy.

• Lindy Waters was out with an apparent concussion. A team struggling with depth lost one of their better players against a top 10 OU team. Not good.

• How many Big 12 teams are going to be in the top 10 this year? Over or under six?

• Why are all of OU’s big white guys good? And why can they shoot? While we’re here — Trae Young gets the headlines, but Brady Manek is going to be the real pain in OSU’s ass over the next four years. Mostly because Young will be on the Sixers this time next year.

• Yo.

• So, uh, did OSU not know Tavarius Shine was playing with four fouls, or did they just not care because they were down 20? I kind of think they didn’t know.

• The Shine-Young and Kendall Smith-Young dustups were great. Lots of jawing and some minor kerfuffles mixed in. Bedlam is better when it gets testy like that. Related: Young might want a piece of some of OSU’s guys. Cam McGriff is not one of them.

• The 109 points OSU gave up are the most it has given up since 1990 and the fifth-most ever. OU averages more than anybody in the country, and this is their fifth 100-point game.

• Young gets more calls than MJ in his prime! He pushes off a LOT and creates his own fouls, which is clever and a sign of maturity, but my gosh!

• Is OSU’s best offense a pick-and-roll with Smith and Carroll at the top of the key? It seems like they should attempt to run this more than they do.

• Why would you ever be a college basketball ref? I’d have to be paid like $500,000 a year to even consider it.

• Carroll had just his seventh career double-double.

• LOL!

• Nobody has ever wanted to dunk on OU more than Jeffrey Carroll wanted to dunk on OU on Wednesday night.

• What’s up with the pre-free throw music? That seems like something Owasso High would do.

• Sima is … Sima might be pretty good.

• Young also gets other players a lot of opportunities. They were 12 for their first 17 from the field. He seems like a guy who just keeps getting better as he ascends the ranks. I like guys like that. That means you didn’t just physically overpower people in high school. You’re smart. You understand basketball. You make people better. How could you not like that?

• Apropos of nothing.

• Nobody knows how to go two for one in college basketball?

• How many open dunks did OU have? Over or under 50.5?
