Oklahoma State’s coaching staff was rewarded in a big way on Friday with its early evaluation on talent by landing a big-time commitment from in-state running back prospect Rodney Fields. Fields is a 2024 recruit from Southeast High School in Oklahoma City whose only reported offer was the Cowboys following a visit to Stillwater earlier in the week.

Fields is not yet ranked at any recruiting service but is likely to draw interest in coming weeks after a breakout junior season in which he rushed for 1,147 yards and 17 touchdowns on 107 carries. He also had 23 catches for 480 yards receiving to go with five receiving touchdowns.

Fields is just the second commitment to OSU in the 2024 cycle but the second from within the state boundaries to pledge allegiance to the orange and black. He joins fellow in-stater Josh Ford, a Stillwater tight end, who earlier this month committed to the Cowboys following a relatively quick courtship as well.

OSU’s securing of Fields gives it a solid addition at running back at a time where the position is in flux a bit. With Ollie Gordon returning the team has a solid starter to build around but the youth outside of him is a question mark after four-star CJ Brown left the program. That has only been exacerbated after OSU did not add a 2023 running back (at least so far) outside of transfer Elijah Collins. (Though OSU this week did extend an offer to a 2023 high schooler from Utah.)

It doesn’t appear as if Fields is necessary an overwhelming physical force as a running back, but the tape shows he plays big and has the agility both in the running game and in the passing game to be a big-time playmaker in the Big 12. Southeast highlighted his skills in a great way this past season by getting him into space on swing passes to allow him to go one-on-one with defenders, and it wouldn’t surprise if OSU tried to use him in a similar way because of his dual-threat ability and willingness to pass protect.
