OSU Wrestling: Cowboys Beat West Virginia 34-3 in Morgantown

Troy Spratley avenged two of his five losses from last season.

As part of Oklahoma State’s 34-3 dual win against West Virginia on Sunday in Morgantown, No. 8 Spratley bested No. 7 Jett Strickenberger 6-2 in the dual’s main event.

After Spratley beat Strickenberger two seasons ago, Strickenberger bested the reigning national runner-up in their two meetings last season, the first a pin in their dual and the second in the Big 12 final.

But Spratley controlled Strickenberger from start to finish Sunday. He scored a first-period takedown and rode it out to take a 3-0 lead into the second. He scored on a quick reversal to start the second period and accumulated more riding time from then on to win it.

That bout ended up being the most notable of the day. The dual had the potential to produce No. 1 vs. No. 2 at 157 pounds, but West Virginia elected to not use No. 1 Ty Watters. Instead, No. 2 Landon Robideau stormed to a 20-5 technical fall against Cole Evans.

That was one of three bonus-point wins for the Pokes, with the others coming at 174 and heavyweight.

After facing four of the top five wrestlers at 174 pounds at National Duals, Alex Facundo has started to roll of late. He’s up to 8-3 on the year after beating Leo Contino with a 20-5 tech fall.

Facundo has won seven in a row with four of those being techs and another being a major decision.

Konner Doucet put on the most dominant performance of the night at heavyweight. He built an 11-0 first period lead against Wilson Spires before putting Spires on his back and pinning him.

Doucet is now 7-1. Three of his wins have come via tech, and now he has this fall.

OSU’s only loss of the afternoon came at 133 pounds. Freshman Ronnie Ramirez got the start with him and Richard Figueroa splitting time at the weight thus far this season. Ramirez dropped his bout to Gunner Andrick 4-2 with Andrick winning via a takedown in the third.

The Cowboys are 7-1 on the year and have a big one upcoming. They’ll travel to Lincoln next Sunday for a dual against Nebraska. The two teams met at National Duals, where OSU dominated to the tune of a 33-6 win.
