PFB Comments of the Week (December 8)

Published

on

The Cowboys are going bowling once again. This year, the Pokes will head to the Camping World Bowl in Orlando, Florida, to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies. The game will kick off at 4:15 CST on December 28th.

While the football team won’t play their final game until the end of the month, the competition for basketball will begin ramping up. OSU hosts No. 6 Wichita State on Saturday, and conference play is right around the corner.

The Cowboys are also entering a crucial recruiting period for the football team. The future of Cowboy football will be shaped over the next few months. With plenty of exciting times ahead, let’s take a look at our comments of the week.

1. Bowl Swag

End of the article was fantastic. And this bowl gift is like your mom going “I bought that thing you sent me the link to” – GIVE GIFTS WE CAN DISCUSS! Although, a gift card is kind of like cash as they have freedom in their purchase, so can they get in trouble with NCAA for what they buy? –GeoPoke on bowl swag gifts.

Gift cards are nice because it gives the players the option to do what they want. Back when the Camping World Bowl was the Russel Athletic Bowl, Virginia Tech played in the 2012 game and won 13-10 over Rutgers. The game sealing interception was made by Antone Exum for the Hokies. Exum was named MVP of the game. He also spent his $400 Best Buy gift card on three kids he met in the store, letting them pick out whatever they wanted. You can’t go wrong with bowl swag.

2. J.D. King

I will never ever be able to explain King getting over 150 yards and multiple scores on the road vs WVU, and then getting the ball a total of 8 times the rest of the entire season, zero times against OU or Kansas. Was he hurt? Did he do something wrong in practice or in the classroom? Doesn’t make sense. –OSU Student on J.D. King.

Maybe there is something we don’t know about, but Justice Hill was a sure thing. Gundy knows what he’s getting with Justice. I’m sure King will see an increase in touches next season, along with Chuba Hubbard. Also, Gundy noted that he was dinged the week of the KU game.

3. Virginia Tech’s Defense

Are we sure that Virginia Tech has an elite defense? West Virginia was the best total offense (by far) and the passing offense that Virginia Tech faced all year. The only other teams they played in the top 50 in passing yards per game are East Carolina and Virginia. Clemson and Miami aren’t elite offenses, and the rest of their schedule is littered with teams like Old Dominion, Duke, and Pittsburgh. I would bet they get exposed against the best passing attack in the country. –Michael H on the Virginia Tech defense.

Virginia Tech traditionally likes to play a lot of man defense. This could play into OSU’s hands. Defensive coordinator Bud Foster is aggressive though, and will probably blitz to help shut down the run, and force Rudolph to throw before he wants to. The offense should be fine, but don’t be surprised if the Tech defense forces a turnover or two. I also doubt Mason Rudolph will be able to throw for 400 on this defense. I’d say closer to 250 is more realistic.

4. New Defensive Coordinators?

If Spencer were to go, I wouldn’t mind keeping Clements as DL coach. I think he’s done a pretty good job recruiting and developing some guys there. I don’t know that it would work to promote him to DC. Hasn’t really worked out promoting Spencer when Young was let go. –Poke Joke on potential replacements for Glenn Spencer.

Promoting Joe Bob Clements seems to be a popular opinion. In a perfect world, winner of the Camping World Bowl gets to take Bud Foster home. Unfortunately Foster isn’t leaving Virginia Tech. I think it could be a smart idea to hire a guy like Chad Glasgow from TCU and name Clements co-coordinator for a few years if Spencer goes. This gives Clements the experience he would need to either be Glasgow’s successor, or to land a job at another school.

5. OSU Coordinators

MY is a top 24 coach. Regardless of anyone’s opinion on him, having the number 1 offense in the country isn’t easy to do. GS is not a top 24 coach. I think Yurcich calls some dumb calls sometimes, but I think Gundy has a little to do with that. Yurcich isn’t a bad coach. It’s funny, after the TCU game people called for his job after he put up 31 on the 6th best defense in the nation and we lost (our defense gave up 44 to an inept offense). People griped about him in the OU game when we put up 52 (our defense gave up 62). People were attacking him after the offense scored 40 on KSU (defense gave up 45 to an even more inept offense). If we could land a reasonably effective DC, I think it goes a long way in pushing OSU a little closer to where we need to be. –OSU Student on Mike Yurcich and Glenn Spencer.

Replacing Spencer with a top 24 coordinator would go a long way. Defense in the Big 12 can only be so good, but TCU has been the best at it this year. It would be smart to hire Chad Glasgow if Spencer leaves. If Gary Patterson thinks highly enough of him to make him his defensive coordinator, and to keep him around after all these years, why not give him a shot?

6. Spencer Sanders V. Corn Dog

Unless Sanders comes in and absolutely lights it up in the summer, I kind of hope for a redshirt. TC, albeit in limited reps, looked like far and away the best QB to still be on the roster in 18-19. Wudtee can run for sure, but he looks closer to being a wildcat QB than a duel threat QB. Sanders is likely the future, but I think given the time in the program the size and the fact that he at least seems to have the arm to run the O, TC should be our QB in 18-19. –Chris Baker on the quarterback competition for next season.

Spencer Sanders will have his time in Stillwater regardless of early enrollment. Good for him for enjoying his senior year. As for next season’s quarterback competition, OSU would be in good hands with Taylor Cornelius. Plus, imagine all the great Corn Dog tweets that could come out of him starting? If the Pokes decide to roll with Sanders, he sure will have earned it. Next season will be an interesting one for sure.

7. Mitchell Soloman

Solomon is the glue guy for this team. He doesn’t have great numbers but he does all the little things that don’t show up on the stat sheet that helps this team both offensively and defensively. –StillOriginal on Mitchell Solomon.

Mitchell Solomon isn’t going to wow you on the court. He has his moments, yes, but for the most part he’s just another guy. Solomon’s biggest impacts for this team are made behind the scenes as a good locker room guy, and someone who pushes his teammates to be better.

8. An 8-Team Playoff

The Big Ten has much more influence on things than the Big 12 does. Hopefully having the Big Ten shut out of the playoffs this year will light a fire to go to 8 teams (with Power 5 conference champs as automatic qualifiers). –David on an 8 team playoff.

Having an eight-team playoff would be ideal. This way, a Power 5 conference champion isn’t left out. Teams who don’t make an eight- team playoff would have no room to say they should’ve made it in because they would likely have multiple losses, as well as not winning their conference. This also ensures an at-large team doesn’t get in over a conference champion.

9. Shea Patterson

Good lord I’m as excited as the next guy for the Sanders era to begin, but I’d be ok for that to be put on hold for a year. Justice Hill, JD King, China Hubbard, Tyron Johnson, Jalen McCleskey, Dillon Stoner, Tyrell Alexander, LC Greenwood all with Shea Patterson triggering that thing?!?!?!?! That could potentially be better than this year’s offense. Well, assuming Yurcich and Gundy stay out of the way. –Aaron on Shea Patterson.

I would put my money on Patterson going to Michigan. They’re the clubhouse leaders at this point, anyway. I don’t think anyone would be opposed to Patterson coming to Stillwater. If he doesn’t have to sit next season, that takes away Corn Dog’s shot at glory, and Sanders would probably redshirt. However, Patterson has program-altering talent.

10. Washington Wins The Biletnikoff

Well done to James! This was beyond well-deserved and really wasn’t even a battle. He was by leaps and bounds the best out there. With that and the Golden Armed Rudolph, you’d think that…well. That’s for a different time. Proud of this guy and now we’re officially Wide Receiver U. –AC on James Washington winning the Biletnikoff Award.

James Washington took home the Biletnikoff Award, becoming the third winner from Oklahoma State. This means that Stamford, Texas, likely has more Biletnikoff Award winners than your hometown. Incredible. Congratulations to James Washington.
