Purdue Among The More Intriguing Games That Could Have Been for OSU
It’s been awhile, but I thought the off-season was the perfect time to continue our series of games OSU scheduled, then canceled. We already looked at the canceled series against Clemson and Air Force. This time we look at a match-up that looks a lot better today than it back then… Purdue.
OSU and the Boilermakers were originally set to square-off in a home-and-home series in 2016 and 2019. While no official reason was given for the cancellation, it came during the infamous time of conference realignment.
The Cowboys would have traveled to Lafayette, Indiana to open the series on September 17, 2016. (The game was eventually replaced with game one of the Pittsburgh home-and-home). That year the Boilermakers went 3-9.
While Pitt was a better opponent in 2016, the match-up for 2019 is one fans will miss out on. Purdue would have traveled to Stillwater in 2019 for a week 3 matchup, and it would have been exciting.
The job Jeff Brohm did in his first season at Purdue was incredible; 7-6 with a bowl win. It was Purdue’s first trip to a bowl game since the 2012 Heart of Dallas Bowl. Purdue’s offensive will only get better after he’s able to get more of his own players. I think the showdown between OSU and Purdue in 2019 would have been one to watch. Instead OSU will get at Oregon State, McNeese State, and at Tulsa. Yippee!
Oh well. I guess we’ll always have the Heart of Dallas bowl.
