Ranking the 2018 Oklahoma State Football Uniform Combinations
OSU’s top three uniform combos in 2018 were fabulous.
No. 1 was easy, and so was No. 13. Everything in between those two? Not so much. I went back and looked at all of the combinations OSU wore in 2018 and tried to sort out which ones I liked best. It was also a nice reflection on the terrific work Jackson Lavarnway did all season.
Let’s jump in.
1. The ?
I’m still kind of stunned that it happened. An all-timer that should only be worn in massive home games.
2. Bedlam Repeat
Bonus points to Chuba for going black tights on the bottom, and bonus points to Oklahoma State for trying to pull some of the ’14 magic (it almost worked). This should be the permanent Norman combo.
3. The TCU Combo
Elite helmet, great road combo, this was one of my low-key faves of the entire era of the new sets. And that’s as strong a top three (and top four!) as you’re going to see for any team in the nation. Wow!
4. Bowl Game Black
Not Ed Hardy > Ed Hardy
5. Storm Trooper Whites
The helmets really made it pop. I should probably have it ranked ahead of the bowl game threads on the helmet alone, but the bowl helmet was salty as well.
6. BBG vs. S. Alabama
These were great, even though they’re rocking a helmet that was a shirt in the mid 2000s. With the matte black helmet, these would have taken a run at the top three.
7. The K-State Combo
I don’t know, maybe I’m just tired of Big Chrome Pete. These should be higher on the list, but I feel like I’ve maybe seen them too many times.
8. The Classics
You know you have a good uniform set when these babies can’t even crack the top seven!
9. Iowa State Black
I do think it looks strong with the orange face masks, but this is how much I dislike those helmets. ?Change the lid, and this rises all the way to No. 4.
10. The Senior Night Combo
Too many 1-2-2 combos! I will say I like the addition of the stripe down the middle of the helmet. OSU has nailed not only the big picture stuff but also the small pieces that make unis great.
11. The Black-White-White
It was fine, and I wanted to like it (and even did to some extent), but I can’t put it ahead of any of the ones in front of it.
12. The Opener
I love those helmets, but I do not love them atop the all-oranges. I also don’t love the 1-2-2 look in general. I’m more of a 1-2-3 or 1-2-1 or even a 1-1-2 guy.
13. The All-Gray
There’s not much that needs to be said about this one. I’m certainly not anti-gray, but this was atrocious. Fun helmets that need to see more of the spotlight, though!
