Uniforms
Ranking the football uniforms: No. 21
A different look but a good one. These were worn in a win over Texas Tech in 2013.
This curious combination debuted at Texas Tech in 2013. The “Clint Chelf has getting away from the cops speed” game, if you will.
Here’s a closer look at this combo:
Uniform No. 21:Â Orange-White-White
Worn:Â 2013Â at Texas Tech
Result(s):Â 1-0 (52-34 over Tech)
Orange helmet: 2-0
White tops: 2-0
White pants: 3-0
These are odd but I sot of liked them for some reason. This is going to the most questionable thing I’ve ever written about uniforms (and maybe anything) on this blog but I like how the orange helmet matches up with the orange auxiliary gear (undershirts, shoelaces, sleeves, etc.)
Plus you guys know I’m a sucker for the all whites.
I don’t think it popped like some of the other combinations ahead of it but against Tech’s all-black threads I thought it was a really dominant look.
I asked Carson Cunningham — a uniform connoisseur himself — to start weighing in on these rankings so you would get a different side of the coin. Here’s his take:
Carson:This was a very curious combination, because I remember hearing rumors that they were originally wearing O-W-B but changed at the last minute.
The rumor was the players have become superstitious about tri-colored unis (2011 Iowa State, 2012 Baylor). I have no idea if that’s true, but I hope not. That would be crushing for Kyle, the tri-colors’ biggest advocate. Maybe they didn’t want to clash with Tech’s unis. Who knows.
Anyway, these aren’t high on my list but I appreciated the attempt at a new combo. We have seen all-white plenty, at this point I’m all for new looks. No more retreads unless we’re talking all-black or B-O-B, unis of that ilk.
That said, I did enjoy the orange helmet with the traditional road look. Kyle’s mention of auxiliary gear immediately brought this to mind: Orange socks would have really made this combo pop. Like the ones we saw in 2013 Bedlam. Hey, another excuse to use Justin Gilbert as our model:
All in all, O-W-W a solid road look. But I would have preferred to see the black pants.
