Spencer Sanders to Start Season at Quarterback for Oklahoma State
Spencer Sanders is QB1.
The wait is over. Spencer Sanders has been named QB1 for Oklahoma State.
According to Stadium’s college football insider Brett McMurphy, Sanders beat out graduate transfer Dru Brown and will take the field first to start the game on Friday night.
Oklahoma State freshman QB Spencer Sanders will start vs. Oregon State, sources told @Stadium. Sanders, who beat out senior Dru Brown, will be 1st OSU freshman QB to start season opener since Wes Lunt in 2012

Leading into the week, there was buzz about Brown and about Sanders, but little clarity about which — if any — had won the gig. In OSU’s first official depth chart, both were named as QB1 with only an “or” separating their names.
It’s unclear at this point just how far Sanders separated himself in the quarterback competition — and if Brown, who by all accounts had a great camp — will get reps at all in Game 1 or moving forward. But by all indications based off Gundy’s radio show appearance with Dave Hunziker this week, Sanders will get a long leash and be given free reign to learn and grow as a first-time starter.
Sanders, a former Gatorade Texas Player of the Year, signed with OSU and arrived on campus last season. He didn’t play a snap last season, drawing a redshirt.
